Newbury each-way racing tip: Karl Philippe primed for another season debut win

I K Brunel steams to Newbury success
Tipstrr racing pundit Steve Jones has his expert eye for value on a Fergal O’Brien-trained eight-year-old who has made a habit of producing the goods on his first outings over the past few seasons.
14:25 Newbury: Coral Racing Club Handicap Chase (2½ miles)
On his seasonal debut last year, Karl Philippe won a 10-runner handicap over just shy of two and a half miles on good ground at Wetherby, a performance that was subsequently franked by the runner-up, Zanza going on to win a Class 2 handicap at this venue on his next run before coming back here to win the Grade 2 Denman Chase.
Zanza is now 21 pounds higher than when comfortably beaten by Karl Philippe (under conditions similar to these), who in turn is only four pounds worse off.
Karl Philippe returned to Wetherby on Boxing Day, finishing runner-up of 10 to The Paddy Pie with the pair 10 lengths clear of rivals rated up to 142.

Karl Philippe’s record when fresh is worthy of note, with the first run of each of his four seasons resulting in impressive figures of 1121.
The only time he has been beaten on seasonal debut was in 2021 when the only one of 35 rivals to beat him was the extremely well-handicapped Papa Tango Charly, who won again next time off 10 pounds higher and who is now 16lbs higher.
Under Jack Hogan, who rode him to win at Wetherby on last season’s debut run, Karl Philippe can repeat the trick today.
Suggested bet: Karl Philippe in the 14:25 at Newbury

Elsewhere, Frero Banbou is the most solid of the market leaders as he arrives on the back of a fine third of 10 finish in the valuable Grand Sefton Handicap, run on the National course at Aintree.
That was over 21 furlongs of testing ground, and he only faded inside the last furlong, so this better ground shouldhelp him get this trip more strongly.
He also showed very useful form (second of eight) in a Grade 3 handicap at Ascot when the ground was good last season, and he is also a winner on good-soft.
.Next best bet: Frero Banbou in the 14:25 at Newbury
