Newbury best bet (1510): Proven stayer Gaye Legacy lining up second handicap success

Thomas Darby wins long distance hurdle at Newbury
This race has been dominated by six-year-olds recently, and favourite, Between Waters, is one of three in the 17-runner field, making her handicap debut after finishing second in her two hurdling runs
15:10 Newbury: Ray Dalfsen Mares’ Handicap Hurdle (3 miles 52 yards)
Between Waters has been a beaten favourite on each of her last three outings, so she is clearly well-regarded, but a better value bet at the prices is another of the six-year-olds, Gaye Legacy, who is already well-proven over this staying trip.
Gaye Legacy was campaigned over two miles for the first six runs of her career, but she hasn’t looked back since stepping up in trip following a break from which she returned at the end of October.

Her three most recent runs have all been over today’s three-mile trip and she has beaten 20 of the 22 rivals she has faced in those three competitive handicaps, including in mixed company.
Her first run as a staying handicapper saw her win a seven-runner Class 4 contest over 23 furlongs (on good-soft) at Market Rasen in November, and she has improved again in defeat on each of her two subsequent runs, the first of which was over an extended three miles at Aintree in December, when she finished runner-up among seven Class 4 runners.
The mare progressed again against her own sex last time when she finished second of 11 in a much stronger Class 2 handicap over 24.5 furlongs at Kempton, and now up just a couple of pounds, she has a good chance to extend her fine record in this type of event.
Suggested best bet: Gaye Legacy in the 15:10 at Newbury

Of the others, Don’t Rightly Know could easily outrun her big early prices on the back of her solid third of eight in a higher-graded Class 3 contest over 21.5 furlongs at Wincanton’s heavy ground earlier this month.
She would have been closer but for a mistake at the last and she had returned to action in late November (after a very long absence) with an easy win over 23 furlongs at Exeter, so she will likely benefit from reverting to a longer trip (than last time) together with the better ground.
Next Best bet: Don’t Rightly Know in the 15:10 at Newbury
