There’s plenty of experienced chasers among the 11-strong field in this three-mile handicap, and there’s a buzz in the Tipstrr camp that conditions might just suit one of the early-market outsiders.

14:45 Musselburgh: James and Gloria Roche Handicap Chase (2 miles 7 furlongs 138 yards)

At the time of writing, only four of the scheduled starters carry a single-digit price, with Magna Sam, Half Shot and Innis Oirr all tussling for the favourite tag on or around the 7/2 mark, with 6/1 shot Concetto making up the quartet of early market leaders.

They all hold realistic claims, of course, but those odds hold little value for the average punter, which suggests better value might be found among the remaining seven runners, many of whom look well capable of outracing their double-figure odds.

Lucinda Russell’s Methodtothemadness deserves serious consideration after enjoying back-to-back course-distance victories here in February, while another previous course-and-distance winner, Pookie Pekan, could be an interesting prospect on his first outing in 19 months.

Catching the eye of Tipstrr’s each-way specialists, however, is Sandy Thomson’s sparingly raced 10-year-old The Ferry Master, who ended a 13-race losing run with a tidy win at Kelso just three outings ago in May.

He was pulled up in both of his subsequent two races, either side of a four-month break, and his last effort at Carlisle five weeks ago may well have been no more than a pipe-opener following wind surgery.

A claiming jockey was on board that day, so it seems significant that he reunites with Ryan Mania for this ride, especially as this jockey/trainer combination have been in red-hot form over the last week, teaming up to land two wins and three runner-up spots from their last five efforts.

  • Suggested bet: The Ferry Master each-way in the 14:45 at Musselburgh
