Lingfield each-way-tip: Two-time winner Irrelevant looking to defy outsider odds

There’s a decent card at Lingfield’s all-weather track on Monday afternoon, and the favourites might not have things all their own way in this competitive seven-furlong sprint.

15:45 Lingfield: Best Racing Odds Guaranteed at BetMGM Handicap (7 furlongs)

With six of the nine runners available at double-digit odds, the bookies have this marked down as a three-horse race between the three market principals, which are headed by Edward Bethell’s short-priced favourite Berrygate.

This lightly-raced maiden has never finished outside the top three in four outings that include an impressive second of eight at Southwell just six days ago. The filly has strong claims off an unchanged mark, although second-favourite Amancio could be lined up to hit the ground running under Oisin Murphy after a three-month break.

Romanee could be a threat as he steps up in trip for his handicap debut, but of even more interest further down the betting two-time winner Irrelevant, who has had the bookies scratching their heads with his price running fluctuating between 10/1 and 25/1 during the morning.

Whatever his price, the three-year-old will need the top three to falter if he is to make an impact, but it's worth noting that he is the only runner to have two recent victories under his belt, both at Kempton over this distance and a mile in September and October respectively.

He was given two months off following a sub-par run at Chelmsford in November, and looked in much better shape on his return to Kempton 26 days ago when rallying into third spot, less than 1.5 lengths behind the winner, despite being bumped at the start and finding himself poorly placed as the leaders made for home.

That was Paddy Bradley’s first time on board Lee Carter’s gelding, so he should now know more about his charge as he brings his three-pound claim back to the saddle looking for a clearer run from an outside draw.

Suggested bet: Irrelevant each-way in the 15:45 at Lingfield
