Lingfield each-way tip: Ajrad flying under the radar at hefty odds

There’s some fascinating races on Lingfield’s all-weather card on Monday, and none more so than the last contest of the day, in which the short-priced favourite might not have things all his own way.

If the betting is a reliable yardstick, then the Jack Jones-trained Thoughtful Gift should prove hard to beat if Oisin Murphy can get the five-year-old to build on a couple of recent one-length near misses at Southwell last month and over this course and distance 15 days ago.

However, until the favourite lands that first maiden success, question marks must remain, and his very short price only adds each-way value to his 10 rivals, especially for anyone who shops around for a bookie offering an extra place.

Hold The Press looks best equipped to make a challenge after landing his own maiden success at this venue in September, before going on to make the frame in three subsequent outings over the same seven-furlong trip here.

Beyond the three market leaders, the remaining eight scheduled starters are all available at 14/1 or greater, and while in most cases there are obvious reasons for those odds, it does mean there are some decent performers more than capable of landing a blow at tasty odds.

Laura Mongan’s Regal Glory has won at this venue before, came a promising fourth of 11 over a shorter seven-furlong trip here 11 days ago, and could improve further over this longer trip.

That very same argument could be made for Ajrad, and might be the reason why Michael Attwater’s six-year-old has caught the eye of some of Tipstrr’s each-way specialists, who have taken note of his strong finish to get his nose in front of the reopposing Hold The Press here in January.

Ajrad was never on terms after finding himself poorly positioned  in his more recent outing over the same trip, and he loses his one-pound advantage this time around, but that can not fully explain the imbalance between his current 16/1 odds and the 9/2 available for Hold The Press.

If the bookies are correct, then the first three home could well be as cut-and-dried as the market suggests, but if they’ve made an oversight, then Ajrad must enter each-way calculations at a very tidy price

Suggested best bet: Ajrad each-way in the 16:50 at Lingfield
