Lingfield best each-way bet: Step up in trip can bring best out of Kessaar Power

Kessar Power’s best all-weather run came at this track in June last year, when he finished a never nearer second of seven in a higher-graded Class 4 handicap over six furlongs.

Phil McEntee’s four-year-old ran in that Class 4 off a mark of 79, and his performance prompted the suggestion that he would be more effective over a longer distance on this, the sharpest of all the synthetic venues, and he must be worthy of serious consideration down in a lower-tier Class 5 off just 69.

More recently, in November, Kessaar Power finished a very close runner-up again (beaten a neck) in a 0-72 over six furlongs at Chelmsford, where he tried to make every yard and was only fractionally beaten for finishing speed in the final yards.

The best of his two seven-furlong all-weather handicap performances was his  fourth of 10 in a 0-75 at Southwell, a race he contested off 73 as a two-year-old.

It was certainly a good enough run to make him of interest in a weaker 0-70 off 69, especially as he prefers this surface to Southwell’s tapeta track, and he could certainly outrace his odds under his regular rider John Egan, who knows him better than anyone.

Suggested bet: Kessaar Power each-way in the 13:50 at Lingfield

Elsewhere, Mick Appleby is well known for his ability to improve the older horses he acquires from other yards so Counsel, a six-year-old obtained from Ian Williams two weeks ago, is of major interest on his stable debut.

He hasn’t raced since finishing second in a three-runner seller at Leicester back in June last year and he hasn’t raced on the all-weather since he was well beaten in the second of his runs over this course and distance last May.

However, he did win over this course and distance first time around in 2022, and if Appleby can quickly bring him back to anything like his old form then he could be very dangerous back here in a lower-tier Class 5 off 67.

Next Best bet: Counsel each-way in the 13:50 at Lingfield
