Lingfield best bets: Edmund Ironside looks strong, On The Nose an each-way option

There’s some competitive races to enjoy at Lingfield’s all-weather track on Thursday afternoon, and none more so than this 10-furlong handicap that appears to be a wide-open contest.

If the betting market is a reliable yardstick, then this handicap is likely to be dominated by Platinum Prince and Edmund Ironside, who have both enjoyed previous visits to the Surrey track.

That said, it’s more than two years since Platinum Prince enjoyed his only course-distance success here, and 13 outings since he last tasted victory of any kind at Brighton in September 2022.

He did show a glimpse of that form when coming second of 10 at Chelmsford last month, but even with the seven-pound claim of returning jockey Anna Gibson, he looks vulnerable at such a short price.

Fellow market-leader Edmund Ironside looks better weighted to make a bold bid here after finishing a decent fifth when last seen in action at Wolverhampton six weeks ago.

Suggested best bet: Edmund Ironside in the 16:40 at Lingfield

His last win came over a mile at this venue in November, a success that he followed up with a couple of quickfire back-to-back runner-up spots over the same trip in December.

The cheekpieces that were discarded on his last outing are reapplied here, and in the capable hands of Paddy Bradley, Michael Attwater’s promising four-year-old could well give a good account of himself.

In an open-looking handicap of this nature, the frame places appear to be up for grabs, and catching the eye at a double-digit price is recent last-time-out winner On The Nose.

Adam West’s six-year-old returns to action less than 48 hours after causing an upset at Brighton on Tuesday, when she held off the late challenges of the two market leaders to win by half a length as a 40/1 outsider.

The handicapper has been quick to burden her with a five-pound raise, but the astute booking of three-pound claimer Connor Planas helps absorb some of that penalty, and assuming that the mare is none-the-worse for the quick turnaround, then there is every reason to expect another bold run from her here.

Each-way punt: On The Nose each-way in the 16:40 at Lingfield
