Leicester best bet (1638): Drop in class can put Mitrosonfire back in the mix

The top of the market might be a little congested for this competitive seven-furlong sprint, but that leaves some appealing each-way value lower in the betting.

Metabolt looks likely to be sent off as the tentative favourite, with David Loughnane’s five-year-old expected to build on his season debut a month ago, when he blew away eight months’ worth of cobwebs with a promising fourth of 12 over this distance at Chester’s May Festival.

His main threat appears to come in the shape of Charencey, who rounded off some improving all-weather performances with a tidy win on turf debut over this course and distance 24 days ago, leaving trainer Ian Williams with high hopes of another bold bid here.

Hat Toss and Mother Mary are unlikely to go down without a fight, but catching the eye at a much more attractive price is long-time under-achiever Mitrosonfire, who is looking to end a 22-race drought since his last success over this distance at Newmarket in August 2022.

Suggested best bet: Mitrosonfire in the 16:38 at Leicester

The six-year-old has had his fair share of near misses in that time, and can probably be forgiven for finishing eighth of 11 on season debut at Newbury 17 days ago, when he was pitched straight into strong 0-105 company after more than four months away from the track.

All of his rivals that day were rated significantly higher than anything he will face in this 0-85 affair, and if that pipe-opener has tuned him up as expected, then he could give a much more purposeful account of himself here.

Factor in that this will be the first time he is in the capable hands of Tom Marquand, whose presence in the saddle can only help improve his chances here, and a frame finish looks a very feasible outcome.
