Kempton racing top tips: Gustavian strongly tipped to bounce back on chase return

A small field lines up for this handicap chase at Kempton (16:10), but there’s more than enough quality among the six remaining starters to offer the prospect of a fascinating contest.

Anyone whose money is on the early favourite Pepe Le Moko will be looking for repeat of his course-distance success here last time out six weeks ago, when he cruised 14 lengths clear of his four rivals.

His nine-pound hike shouldn’t cause too many issues, but it does offer some hope of a closer contest for the likes of the Skelton yard’s Heltenham, who is looking to bounce back from a couple of below-par outings, while last-time-out winner Grandads Cottage could also have a say in the capable hands of Sean Bowen.

We’ll be keeping an eye on those two, but our final nod goes to Gustavian, who appears at first glance to have done little to get too excited about so far this term, but has created a flurry of support within the Tipstrr camp.

This outing comes on the anniversary of Gustavian’s sole success over fences at Exeter, and although off the boil since, Anthony Honeyball’s nine-year-old offered a hint of bouncing back when runner-up behind Richmond Lake at Aintree in December, with Heltenham a distant third.

Best bet: Gustavian in the 16:10 at Kempton

Sam Twiston-Davies was on board that day, and he returns to the saddle here after being absent for Gustavian’s brief and fruitless return to smaller obstacles in a valuable Class 1 hurdle race at Sandown three weeks ago.

As an interesting footnote, it’s unusual to see Paul Nicholls saddling the outsider in any field, and it would be unwise to discount Golden Son, or indeed any horse emerging from the Ditcheat stables.

With Planet Sport Bet Ambassador Harry Cobden back on board Golden Son after having to pull him up on their last two starts together in December, it will be fascinating to see what the aspiring champion jockey can extract from this promising French raider .

Suggested each-way punt: Golden Son in the 16:10 at Kempton
