The ‘European Road to the Kentucky Derby’ Conditions Stakes is the standout race at Kempton on Wednesday evening as Charlie Appleby chases a third win in four.

Archie Watson’s Brave Emperor denied him a hat trick last year but Appleby’s strike rate at Kempton is dazzling and this year's entrant, Notable Speech, is notable indeed. 

William Buick gets the ride on Wednesday and that’s also important because his strike rate at Kempton sees him win roughly one in four.

They’re all just numbers without a capable horse but Notable Speech showed bags of promise with a win over course and distance less than four weeks ago.

Blown Away is priced as the most likely challenger and that would seem fair. The beaten favourite has featured in the frame in four of five outings and has been gelded since the narrow loss at Kempton.

Only Jakarta’s absence leaves us a five-horse racing with Cuban Tiger, Solomon and Arctic Thunder making up the rest of the field.

The former was very well supported in the minutes leading up to debut at Southwell and proceeded to make light work of that race.

This represents a step up in trip and quality of the opponent, but keep an eye on him in the pre-race market.

Solomon and Arctic Thunder are both twice-raced winners who made light work of recent outings and look capable of progression.
