The 1900 at Kempton on Wednesday looks like the highest-quality race on the card and it looks as if it may be the most competitive.
Beaten favourite Umberto tops the market on the back of a six-month absence. His last appearance came at Kempton in August when he gave a good account of himself, finishing third in a race of similar quality.
Notably, Oisin Murphy has been booked for the ride, which suggests there are loftier ambitions than getting a few yards in his legs upon return.
Trainer Kevin Philippart De Foy has shown himself to be a specialist at saddling winners after an extended break.
Lady Of Arabia is hot on his heels in the betting and stands every chance of making it a hat trick at Kempton.
She produced a career-best last time out with a course and distance win, her third hair, and has been a constant presence in the frame since debuting in 2022.
Longlai has withdrawn but there is still one fellow course and distance winner in the form of Hieronymus.
His latest win at Kempton came in January as trainer George Baker extended his fantastic record at the course. He’s saddled 25 winners and 59 places in the last five seasons for a handsome profit of +36 units.
Michael and David Easterby’s Eligible is a handy distance winner who won at Southwell in early January but was badly hampered upon his return two weeks later.
Gavi Di Gavi and Arctician are both course winners capable of finding a little bit more.
Desfonado finished dead last of 11 on his last appearance at Nottingham in September and hasn’t been since, while Tarbaan and Afta Party look out of their depth.
It’s hard to ignore the volume of supporting factors pointing towards Umberto, including market support, but we’ll also sprinkle a few pennies on the reliability of George Baker.
