Kempton best bet (2000): Drop in class sets up bold bid from Madame Fenella

There’s a decent all-weather card at Kempton on Wednesday, and Tipstrr racing pundit Steve Jones has saved his best-value Daily Bargain for the penultimate race of the night.

20:00 Kempton: Unibet More Extra Place Races Handicap (6 furlongs)

Only two among this field of older handicappers have won on this track before, regardless of trip, and the most attractive of the two is Madame Fenella, who drops down very significantly from Class 4 today.

The mare’s latest effort came in a far stronger Class 4, run over six furlongs two weeks ago at Southwell, where she wasn’t beaten far and the one who finished just in front of her, Muscika, was last seen going extremely close to winning a Class 4 at Lingfield on Sunday.

Suggested best bet: Madame Fenella in the 20:00 at Kempton

Significantly, Madame Fenella is a better performer on polytrack than she is on tapeta, and indeed, the last time she raced on the latter surface was back in June last year when she won by over three lengths as the short-priced favourite at Chelmsford over this distance.

The well-beaten runner-up in that small-field 0-70 handicap is currently racing competitively on the all-weather off marks between 65-67, which makes this weak race look perfectly winnable for Madame Fenella, who is currently a pound lower than she was that day.

With course-distance figures of 3122, and with all of those races being stronger than this one, as well as having contested three of them off higher marks than here, she has to be of strong interest returned here under Cam Hardie, who was in the saddle for both the mare’s all-weather wins.

Of the others, Mellys Flyer hasn’t troubled the principals in any of his six runs since joining Charlie Wallis last October, but a return to this venue for the first time since last March could well spark a revival, as his course-distance figures of 1163 include two Class 4 handicaps and a couple of Class 5s.

He contested those four higher-graded handicaps off marks between 68-80, so he has to be of interest here with Tom Marquand booked for a basement Class 6 event off 58 from a handy rails draw .

Next Best bet: Mellys Flyer in the 20:00 at Kempton
