Bath racing tip (1600): Flash Bardot expected to exploit lesser company

Horse racing expert Steve Jones, who runs the service CD Systems Daily Bargain, has penned his thoughts on the 1600 at Bath.

1600 EBF Fillies Handicap

The three-year-old fillies have dominated this event, winning four of the six previous renewals, including the last two, and the younger age group have a very strong hand once again.

The early favourite is Roger Varian’s Warren Hill on the back of her easy win in lower grade at Nottingham last month, but she came from off a very strong 10f pace that day and it is unlikely that today’s 11.6f pace will be anywhere near as strong.

A stronger bet, particularly at the early prices, is Flash Bardot. In contrast to the favourite, Jack Channon’s filly is already well-proven in higher grade than this, as well as over this distance and further.

Avon Light, Davina Grace and distance winner Dovena complete the lineup of three-year-olds while distance winner Tamilla and beaten favourite Mayfair Gold will also hope to compete.

Her last three runs all came in stronger handicaps than this and she returned figures of 233, so she can take advantage of this easier handicap to land a third career win.

She will appreciate dropping into lower-tier Class 4 company off a 2lbs lower mark today, and this combination of conditions suits ideally because her last win was on quickening ground and she stays further than this, so a testing 11.6f will bring her stamina into play up the finishing hill.

Of the others, her old rival Davina Grace can follow her home again, just as she did when the pair were second and third behind Night Sparkle at Newbury in July.

She is a pound lower than she was for that stronger race and, though she might not be able to reverse the near two-length deficit to Flash Bardot, who runs off the same mark again, she too will find this company easier.

Suggested bet: Flash Bardot in the 16:00 at Bath
