Chepstow racing top tip: Bottom weights look the bet in Welsh Grand National

Iwilldoit Welsh Grand National
The Welsh Grand National takes centre stage at Chepstow on Wednesday and we’ve picked out a handful of horses with a chance.
1450 Coral Welsh Grand National Chase (Premier Handicap)
A total of 20 runners have declared for the Welsh Grand National (2:50) at Chepstow on Wednesday afternoon with the conditions set to play a part as always.
A deluge of rain in the past week plus wet and windy conditions on race day present a challenge but it’s not the most fancied runners can’t handle.
Dual hurdles winner Super Survivor is the bookie’s favourite at the time of writing but Nassalam and Autonomous Grind are hot on his tail and should be well-backed.
The foot of the market features several runners who are out of the handicap and a rank of outsiders who need to show more, like Galloping Bear who is returning from wind surgery.
There isn’t an abundance of clear trends for the Welsh National, but one to note is the winner tends to weigh 10-8 or less.
That brings some big prices into focus such as Wayfinder at 25/1, Charlie Uberalles at 40/1 and of course the favourite, Super Survivor.

He’s close to bottom weight at 10-5 and looks promising over fences. He put forward a promising effort in last year’s novice handicap and looks a quality stayer.
Gavin Sheehan and Jamie Snowden have already made headlines together this winter and it’s also worth noting that Super Survivor is yet to finish outside the top two at Chepstow.
Iron Bridge is 11-3 but by no means would he be the heaviest winner. He took well to chasing last season and is one who could improve further.
Wayfinder seems to have benefited from wind surgery and was able to apply pressure to Nassalam in the trial, while Charlie Uberalles is unexposed as a chaser and could improve, even if it looks a tough ask.
However, Nassalam held on and now bids to match the achievement of Iwilldoit, who could also have a say here, by winning the trial and National.
There isn’t too much evidence to go on but he appears to have the stamina to win this slog of a race and a 4lb penalty isn’t too harsh.
With plenty of places available, we’ve opted to take a stab at several chances, taking into account performances in the trial and the profile of previous winners.
Suggested bet: Iron Bridge each-way in the Welsh Grand National
Suggested bet: Way Finder each-way in the Welsh Grand National
Suggested bet: Nassalam to win the Welsh Grand National
