Chelmsford racing tip: Step up in trip can bring the best out of Society Lion

Chelmsford racecourse
There’s some quality sprinters lining up for this seven-furlong handicap, and Steve Jones, who runs CD Systems on Tipstrr, expects a good run from a horse stepping back up to his preferred distance.

Looking to give the market leaders a run for their money, Society Lion arrives fresh from a short break, and the last time he ran over this course and distance was back in April, since when he has been racing exclusively over six furlongs.
He was won twice over the shorter trip during that time, but he has hinted on more than one occasion that he would benefit from stepping back up to seven furlongs, not least on his final run before his break, when he was never nearer that at the finish without having the pace to trouble the first two home.

On his most recent seven-furlong outing, which also came when he was fresh from a break, he finished a close-up third of seven (beaten a length) in a Class 4 handicap over this trip.
He missed second place by just a head despite racing a bit too keenly in the early stages of a race that was run at just a modest early pace, with his rider deciding to take over in front after two furlongs in order to settle his mount better.
Today’s bigger field should generate a stronger all-round pace, which will suit Society Lion much better, and he runs from the same mark of 80 as well as being partnered once again by Rossa Ryan, who also rode him that day.
Ed Dunlop’s runners are in good form with six of them winning in recent days (three of those at this track, two of them under Ryan) so the signs are promising.
Suggested bet: Society Lion in the 18:00 at Chelmsford

Elsewhere, it’s no surprise to see David O’Meara’s six-year-old Riot at the head of the early market on the back of his solid performances over this distance in Class 4 handicaps on his last three starts.
The first two of those were over this very trip, in which he was beaten just a length and then a neck, each time off a mark of 79 (only a pound lower than today).
On the second occasion, he was beaten only by a three-year-old who got first run on him and the front pair pulled clear, and last week he put in another good run at Lingfield from a very wide berth, so he looks sure to go well again from a more favourable stall 4 draw.
Next best bet: Riot in the 18:00 at Chelmsford
