Chelmsford best bet: Wadacre Gomez to confirm class at favourite track

There’s usually some decent competitive racing to enjoy at Chelmsford’s evening meetings, and this seven-runner handicap over ten furlongs certainly fits that profile.

19:45 Chelmsford:  Leading Environment Solutions Handicap  (1 mile 2 furlongs)

Mighty Nebula is installed as the clear market leader, and there’s certainly plenty to like about Roger Varian’s lightly-raced four-year-old, who won his second career outing on season debut at Kempton in early April.

He backed that up with a decent third of eight when last seen at Wolverhampton three weeks later, and with Silvestre De Sousa taking his reins for the first time, he may well have more to offer on his handicap bow.

The favourite’s short price might be prohibitive for the casual punter, but it does have the knock-on effect of enhancing the value of his rivals, whose challenge is led by Charlie Johnston’s four-year-old, Wadacre Gomez.

Of his five wins from 19 Flat runs, three have come over this very trip on his last three visits to this venue, two of them coming either side of Christmas.

Suggested best bet: Wadacres Gomez in the 19:45 at Chelmsford

He backed up that most recent course-distance success by seeing off nine rivals at Wolverhampton in February, and although less impressive on last month’s season turf debut at Chester, he should relish this return to his favourite synthetic track.

He lines up of a decent mark, and is reunited with Billy Loughnane, who was in the cockpit for the Wolverhampton victory, and who is entrusted with the reins again for a trainer who boasts a 20 percent win rate (49% place rate) from his 94 runners at the Essex course over the last five years.
