Catterick best bet (1650): Lincoln Burrows lined up for further progress under Brian Hughes

Catterick’s afternoon meeting concludes with a competitive handicap that should give the seven-strong line-up of staying hurdlers a stiff stamina test to wrap up Tuesday’s National Hunt action.

With just four betting points covering the top six in the market, it would be easy to disregard the one rank outsider, Teescomponentstrig, although even he should not be fully discounted after showing some recent improvement in reapplied cheekpieces.

More realistically, however, it’s hard to imagine the principal action won’t involve current market leaders Burrows Hall and Shantou Moon, with the former stepping up significantly in trip on his return from a two-month break since finishing runner-up here in December.

Shantou Moon kicked off the new year with a course-distance win here and came within a neck of backing that up in stronger 0-120 company over the same trip last time out 25 days ago.

Both of those must be on most punters’ shortlists here, but they would each do well to keep a wary eye out for the well-treated bottom-weight Lincoln Burrows, who has been making significant improvement for Micky Hammond and could be poised to make further progress here.

A handful of sub-par pre-Christmas outings were laid to rest with a decent third of 14 at Ayr in early January, and the seven-year-old wasted little time in converting that into a two-length success in heavy ground at Newcastle four weeks ago.

First-time cheekpieces may have played a role in that success, so it is no surprise to see them reapplied here, and of even greater significance is the booking of Brian Hughes, who replaces the last-time-out winning claimer.

Hughes piloted a 14/1 shot into Ayr’s winner’s enclosure on his last ride on Monday and it would be no surprise to see the champion jockey coaxing Lincoln Burrows to similar success here.

Suggested best bet: Lincoln Burrows in the 16:50 at Catterick
