Beverley each-way-tip: Gentle Ellen can bring promising 2023 form into season debut

We have a decent card to enjoy at Beverley on Bank Holiday Monday, and there appears to be plenty in with a shout of landing this extended seven-furlong sprint

15:40 Beverley:  Brian Dixon Memorial Fillies’ Handicap (7 furlongs 96 yards)

Thirteen runners are scheduled to go to post, of which the eight carrying odds of 16/1-plus can probably be safely disregarded, although with four each-way places up for grabs, Strangerontheshore is one that could be capable of outrunning her hefty price.

Nigel Tinkler’s six-year-old mare won twice at this venue in 2022, and was last seen bouncing back to form over a mile on Newcastle’s all-weather track in October, keeping on strongly to win impressively in first-time blinkers, which are understandably retained here.

Possible punt: Strangerontheshore each-way in the 15:40 at Beverley

She could well feature among the leading pack on the run-in, which is perhaps more likely to consist of the five clear market leaders, of whom early favourite Do I Dream is strongly backed to complete a hat-trick after last month’s successes at Ripon and Pontefract.

Ben Haslam’s five year-olds has only been penalised two pounds for the latter of those wins, and that raise has been more than accounted for by the seven-pound allowance of useful claimer Sam Feilden.

If the short price of the favourite and Ardbraccan (won on season debut at Nottingham 16 days ago) does not appeal, then arguably better value might be found a little lower down in the shape of Gentle Ellen, who returns to action after more than six months away from the track.

This capable five-year-old mare enjoyed a solid 2023 season that produced a couple of tidy wins at Carlisle and Hamilton, the latter in a similar 0-70 affair to this one.

Gentle Ellen was last seen rounding off a productive campaign in October with a respectable runner-up spot in a competitive 14-runner handicap at Redcar, with the front two well clear of their 12 rivals in heavy testing conditions.

The Barron yard has enjoyed a decent start to the new Flat season, while jockey Callum Rodriguez is more than capable of adding to his successful record at the Yorkshire track, so it would be no surprise to see Gentle Ellen among the first four home to land an each-way return.

Suggested best bet: Gentle Ellen each-way in the 15:40 at Beverley
