One Ruler Profile

Charlie Appleby and William Buick combined in 2018 to win the Epsom Derby with Masar, but with Buick opting for Hurricane Lane over One Ruler, the latter entered the 2021 edition at odds of 17/2.
The odds proved to be quite accurate as One Ruler finished in sixth place, over 14 lengths behind the winner Adayar. Buick's Hurricane Lane finished in third, while James Doyle retook the reins of One Ruler.
As a two-year-old he was a leading prospect and came in a respectable sixth in his only race in 2021 - the Group One 2000 Guineas Stakes, which was Doyle's first ride on One Ruler. In the Derby, he didn't really challenge. He was held up initially at the rear before being shaken up midway through the race. However, he never did enough and made no real impression over the final furlongs.
In his maiden race on July 23, 2020, One Ruler came in second of 13 horses in the Martin Densham Memorial EBF Maiden Stakes at Sandown Park. He struggled leaving the stalls but recovered well to lead with one furlong to go. However, he didn't have the legs and lost by three-and-a-quarter lengths to Etonian, struggling to hold on for second.
Exactly a month later on August 23, One Ruler claimed his first victory in the Betway Maiden Stakes at Sandown Park. Priced at 2/1 in this seven furlong race, he ran faultlessly and was largely unchallenged, winning by one-and-a-half lengths over pre-race favourite Maximal.
In his first race outside of Sandown - at Doncaster on September 11 - One Ruler finished third despite being the 5/4 favourite in the bet365 Flying Scotsman Stakes. He lost the race by two-and-three-quarter lengths to the 17/2 shot New Mandate, with Laneqash finishing second.
One Ruler stepped up in both class and distance (from seven furlongs to a mile) for his next race, the Group 3 Emirates Autumn Stakes at Newmarket on October 10. Priced at 5/1, he ran a strong race and got the lead over a furlong out, holding on to a comfortable win by one-and-three-quarter lengths.
In his final race of 2020 on October 24, he ran in the Group One Vertem Futurity Stakes at Doncaster, which was again over a mile. He ran a good race and disputed the lead with a furlong to go, but ultimately lost to fellow Epsom Derby contender Mac Swiney by three-quarters of a length despite being the 6/4 favourite.
In the only race of his three-year-old season, One Ruler ran in the Group One Qipco 2000 Guineas Stakes on May 1 and came in sixth, five lengths behind winner Poetic Flare. This meant he had over a month's rest before racing in the Derby on June 5, but he couldn't make this count.
One Ruler's connections
Charlie Appleby trains Thoroughbred horses at Godolphin's Moulton Paddocks stable in Newmarket. He has over 25 major career wins including the Epsom Derby in 2018 with Masar. Buick rode One Ruler for his first five outings, but James Doyle took the reins in the 2000 Guineas. He did so again for the Derby. His win percentage on the Flat over the last five years is 21%, having won over 500 races from nearly 2,500 starts. Doyle has been a retained Godolphin rider since 2014 and has close links with Appleby.
