Frankie Focus: Dettori's winning chances on day four of Royal Ascot

A difficult third day at Royal Ascot for Frankie Dettori with none of his rides finishing in the top three. While his hopes of Stradivarius landing a fourth Gold Cup were dashed after being boxed in for much of the race.

2.30 Albany Stakes - Flotus

Both Dettori and trainer Simon Crisford go way back to Crisford's days as Godolphin's racing manager, so this pairing with Flotus comes with real weight.

The sprinter impressed with a scorching maiden win on soft ground at Goodwood in May, leaving Crisford's co-trainer and son Ed, cooing over the Starspangledbanner two-year-old.

The Crisfords may have preferred a higher draw than five, but starting gate position has been no exact science this week so punters shouldn't be put off Flotus who seems likely to be there or thereabouts at the top of the market and in the race placings.

Dettori has an early chance to put his day three disappointment to bed and a win-bet on Flotus at odds of 3/1 or greater could set both him and the Ascot punters up for the day.

3.40 Commonwealth Cup - Campanelle

The lightly raced Campanelle won the Queen Mary last year over five furlongs and is at the top of the market for the six furlong Commonwealth Cup this year.

Dettori did produce Campanelle at Deauville to win the Prix Morny on soft ground, which is a big plus at a sodden Ascot.

Campanelle's only defeat came in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf over an unsuitable mile trip and the drop down to six furlongs should be much more up the three-year-old's street.

Named after a variety of cone-shaped pasta, Frankie fans will be farfalle annoyed if Campanelle doesn't hit the boil.

4.20 Coronation Stakes - Pretty Gorgeous

The testing conditions at Ascot shouldn't be a problem for the Joseph Patrick O'Brien trained Pretty Gorgeous.

Pretty Gorgeous went off favourite for the Irish 1000 Guineas and although finishing in a disappointing seventh, the run will have her fit for the task in the Coronation Stakes.

5.00 Sandringham Stakes - Kestenna

Kestenna is trained by John and Thady Gosden, and Dettori won the Sandringham on Persuasive for John Gosden in 2016 before the Newmarket handler joined forces with his son.

Possibly one of the weakest Dettori chances of the day on paper, Kestenna is still near the top of the market in this open looking one mile contest.

A fifth at York behind Coronation Cup hopeful Primo Bacio wasn't terrible preparation but this will be a tough race in increasingly testing conditions at Ascot.

An each-way bet for race-goers at odds of 17/2 or greater could provide consolation from the rain dripping into their cocktails.
