Doncaster free each-way racing tip: Outsider can defy huge odds in wide-open Portland Handicap

14:25 Doncaster: Betfred Portland Handicap (5 furlongs 143 yards)
Dream Composer comes here at a huge price, which belies the impressive manner in which he won a nice class 2 handicap at Pontefract last time out a month ago.
Posting career-best efforts in speed and performance, he beat American Affair by 1½ lengths, with five other capable rivals strung out behind, and James Evans’ six-year-old looked in no danger at all under Joe Leavy, who brings his useful three-pound claim to the saddle again here.
Eight days before that, he had finished third of 10 behind Holkham Bay on Shergar Cup Day, running well in the conditions despite not having a regular rider on board in the sparingly booked Tadhg O’Shea.
Those results were a significant bounceback from finishing 24th of 25 when lining up with many of today’s rivals in the Steward’s Cup at Glorious Goodwood, but Dream Composer was priced out that race at 50/1 and the 40/1 winner, Get It, was set up perfectly for the race in the outer draw.
Saturday’s race sees Dream Composer drawn in stall 16 next to the pace with Get It in stall 18 and Hiya Maite in 19, and with Doncaster tending to favour a high-numbered stalls over this trip, this wide draw is the place to be so the race should run to suit.
