Planet Sport's team of experts get stuck into the form guides for The Arkle on Tuesday, March 15 at the 2022 Cheltenham Festival.
The Racing Post's David Carr, former Cheltenham Festival winning jockey Dominic Elsworth and Planet Sport's Jonathan Doidge map out their thoughts for the Arkle.
The Arkle Challenge Trophy is the second Grade 1 race of the 2022 Cheltenham Festival and gets underway at 14:10 on Tuesday, March 15, and you can follow the action in our live race centre.
The Nicky Henderson-trained Shishkin won the 2021 Arkle, under Nico De Boinville but doesn't have a runner this year. Instead, fellow British trainer Alan King has a leading fancy in Edwardstone who is catching Planet Sport's panel's attention.
Edwardstone - David Carr (Racing Post)
"This is that rare thing at Cheltenham a Grade 1 race with a British favourite, and possibly a British winner too. Edwardstone has looked better and better each time he runs over fences.
There's going to be a real gallop on in this race and that's going to make it a proper test of jumping and I think he's going to pass it. Edwardstone for all that he's favoured is very much the one to beat."
Edwardstone - Dominic Elsworth (former Cheltenham jockey)
"I've been very impressed with Edwardstone this season. He's been tested at fast tracks like Warwick and Kempton, and also he stays as well having won around Sandown with that big hill to come up. There's the railway fences at Sandown so jumping is at a premium there too.
It'll be one-all after that race."
Edwardstone - Jonathan Doidge (Planet Sport tipster)
"I think Haut En Couleurs could run a really big race each-way, but I do worry a little about Edwardstone that's the one I'm going to nominate.
I don't think I've seen anything that I favour more than him. It's Edwardstone for me."
