Bolshoi Ballet Profile

Name Bolshoi Ballet
Born Apr 08, 2018
Age 3 years
Breed Thoroughbred

Aidan O'Brien's Bolshoi Ballet entered the 2021 Epsom Derby in strong form and was seen as the 11/8 favourite, but he disappointed massively, finishing seventh.

Bolshoi Ballet was Aidan O'Brien's only horse in the Derby, leading many to believe that he was going to be a potential superstar. However, he did not take to the ground and despite initially tracking the leaders, he was outpaced from two furlongs out and tailed off to finish 17 lengths behind the winner Adayar.

Bolshoi Ballet's impressive beginnings

In the first race of his career, on October 3, 2020, Bolshoi Ballet came third in the British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes. Priced at 10/3 and ridden by Ryan Moore, he was beaten by two lengths by Mystical Dawn.

Just 13 days later, he claimed his maiden victory at Leopardstown in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF (C & G) Maiden. He led the race early and despite being joined after two furlongs, it was an impressive showing as he ultimately stretched clear in the final furlong, winning in a time of 1m 48.22s.

On October 24, Bolshoi Ballet raced for the first time in France in the Group One Criterium de Saint-Cloud. He came in fifth, two-and-a-quarter lengths behind the winner Gear Up.

In his first race of 2021 on April 11, Bolshoi Ballet won the Group Three P.W. McGrath Memorial Ballysax Stakes at Leopardstown. Priced as the 2/1 favourite, he raced well and went on to take victory by two-and-a-quarter lengths over Flying Visit.

Bolshoi Ballet won back-to-back races at Leopardstown after claiming victory in the May 9 Group Three Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial Stakes. For the second race in a row, he was ridden by Ryan Moore and ran a strong race to claim victory by six lengths over Lough Derg. Moore was again on board for the Derby.

Aidan O'Brien, Ryan Moore and Bolshoi Ballet's connections

Aidan O'Brien has been the private trainer at Ballydoyle Stables since 1996. His first major success came in the same year, when Desert King won the National Stakes. Desert King went on to win the Irish 2,000 Guineas the following year. In 2012, O'Brien and his son Joseph became the first father-son/trainer-jockey combination to win The Derby with Camelot.

In 2016, O'Brien's horses won a record seven races at Royal Ascot while in 2017, he trained a world record 28 Group or Grade One winners in the same calendar year, smashing Bobby Frankel's 2003 total of 25.

Tabor is a British businessman who regularly appears in the Sunday Times Top 100 Rich List as one of the richest people in Great Britain. He is one of only four men to have raced a winner of both the Epsom and the Kentucky Derbies.

Smith made his money in currency trading. He currently resides in Barbados and has been a member of the Coolmore group since the mid 2000s.

Ryan Moore is an English flat racing jockey, who was Champion Jockey in 2006, 2008 and 2009. He is first choice jockey for O'Brien's Ballydoyle operation. He has over 1,000 career wins and has twice won both the 2,000 Guineas (2015 and 2017) and Epsom Derby (2010 and 2013).
