Nathaniel Collins targets ‘European’ title after thrilling victory over Zak Miller

Boxing Ring

Nathaniel Collins successfully defended his British and Commonwealth featherweight titles following a thrilling 12-round contest with Zak Miller.

Manchester Arena may have only been quarter-full for the opening fight of Queensberry’s Magnificent Seven show, though Miller’s loyal home supporters certainly brought the noise.

The crowd had plenty to cheer as Miller, who was involved in his very first 12-round fight, went all the way against the defending champion.

Both men produced a thrilling display, though it was the Scotsman who edged ahead on the scorecards.

Collins won by majority decision with two of the judges scoring the bout 115-113 in his favour, and the third going for a 114-114 draw.

After the fight, the 27-year-old told the BTR Boxing Podcast Network: “It was great. Great war, good test. Zak came out and gave it his all, obviously I gave it my all and came out the winner.

“It was a bit of a flat performance from me but I got the win, I did the job.”

While both men entered the bout with a 13-0 record, Collins was regarded as the favourite.

When asked whether he was surprised by the display of Miller, the Scotsman said: “His toughness surprised me.

“I caught him with some heavy shots, some body shots, I thought he would’ve been tired, I thought he would’ve folded. He didn’t, so big props.”

He added: “I’m more comfortable standing in the middle, throwing my shots. I’m more comfortable moving, boxing, popping shots. Zak didn’t want to come in and let me do that so I had to push him.

“I showed another side to my game tonight and it was just something a bit new.”

Collins is now looking forward to his next challenge which could come in the form of a continental championship opportunity.

“Hopefully I want to press on for the European [title] whenever that is, early next year,” he said.

“If I can get to Riyad season, take me over there and I’ll put on a war for them as well.”
