‘A genuine geezer’ – Matchroom prospect Jimmy Sains gives Eddie Hearn verdict ahead of second bout

Jimmy Sains believes Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom promotion will start to take over the global boxing landscape over the next decade.

The 22-year-old recently signed with the promotional giant as he aims to embark on a successful professional career.

Sains turned pro in September and won his first fight via TKO against Poland’s Bartlomiej Stryczek at London’s Wembley Arena.

This weekend, the middleweight will share the ring with Jesus Lobeto who boasts a 1-2-1 record.

Sains admitted that fighting under the Matchroom banner was a ‘dream come true’, telling Planet Sport: “To be signed by Matchroom is just unbelievable.

“How hard I worked in the amateurs, to get to where I am. But I think Matchroom at the minute are beginning to take over. They’re getting a lot bigger in America.

“Some great shows in the UK as well, but globally they’ll start to take over in the next five to 10 years. I’m just looking to be a part of that.”

When asked about his relationship with Matchroom supremo Eddie Hearn, Sains added: “He’s just a genuine geezer, we’re both from the same area, Brentwood.

“We’ve got a few similarities, we know a few similar people. He knows my dad from a few years ago as well. He’s a nice geezer, I’m not just saying that because he’s my promotor.”

Sains embarks on his second pro fight just six weeks after his debut. Despite the quick turnaround, the boxer is focused on getting quality fights rather than competing on a regular basis for the sake of it.

He added: “I think getting the right fights at the right time. This one has come within six weeks of my last one. I don’t really mind that to be honest. As long as Tony [Sims] says I’m injury free, I’d like to be as active as I can.

“But I don’t want to be smashing them out every month, I want to be in the gym working on stuff. As long as I’m progressing, that’s the main thing.”

Fans can watch Sains in action against Lobeto on DAZN this Saturday evening.
