ATP Cup betting tips: Stefanos Tsitsipas and Hubert Hurkacz top the bill on day one

The 2022 tennis season kicks off with a host of games on the opening day of the ATP Cup, including a potential thriller between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Hubert Hurkacz.

Winners of the inaugural ATP Cup, Serbia, will kick off their campaign with a clash against a one-man Norway team - led by world number eight, Casper Ruud.

Elsewhere, Argentina take on Georgia while Chile face 2020 finalists, Spain.

However, the pick of all ties sees Poland and Greece go head-to-head. The two teams will feel confident about their chances of progression but in order to book their semi-final place, a win on day one is paramount.

Here, we look ahead to the three biggest games of the day and pick out the best available bets.

Diego Schwartzman (ARG) vs Nikoloz Basilashvili (GEO)

Argentina have been priced as joint-favourites to win their group and progress to the semi-finals.

However, in order for the team to flourish, they will need their star man to be on top form.

Diego Schwartzman enjoyed a strange year in 2021 as he languished on clay - his preferred surface - but flourished on the hard court.

After an inconsistent season, the 29-year-old will be hoping to kick off the new year by stringing together a run of victories.

The world number 13 is the bookies favourite to get past Nikoloz Basilashvili although the Georgian is likely to give him a run for his money.

Basilashvili also endured an inconsistent season last year but he did reach the Indian Wells final just a couple of months ago.

The world number 22 has the ability to give any opponent in the world a tough game. However, we're backing Schwartzman to show quality in the opening game and prevail by two sets to one.

Dusan Lajovic (SRB) vs Casper Ruud (NOR)

Casper Ruud (Norway)

With Novak Djokovic in the team, Serbia were regarded as one of the tournament favourites. Without him, the 2020 champions are likely to struggle.

Dusan Lajovic is the man leading the charge for the Serbs and he immediately faces a huge test in Casper Ruud.

Norway may be a one-man team but that one man has the potential to do a lot of damage.

Ruud enjoyed a stellar 2021 season as he jumped to eighth in the world rankings. The 23-year-old won 57 matches and lost just 17 as he stormed to five ATP titles.

If that wasn't enough, Ruud is unbeaten against Lajovic having won both of their head-to-head games. What's more, the Norwegian is yet to drop a set against his upcoming opponent.

With that in mind, we're backing a comfortable 2-0 win for the world number eight.

Stefanos Tsitsipas (GRE) vs Hubert Hurkacz (POL)

The opening day of the 2022 ATP Cup will see a mouth-watering clash between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Hubert Hurkacz.

The Greek number one endured a mixed 2021 season which included a win at the Monte Carlo Masters but also saw him pull out of the ATP Finals.

Despite enjoying a lot of individual success, Tsitsipas has not had much to shout about in the team game. Considering he is not likely to get a lot of support from his team, the world number four will need to win every game - singles and doubles - in order for his nation to stand any chance of progression.

Hubert Hurkacz finds himself in the same predicament as his Polish side look to win just their second match at the ATP Cup.

The big Pole played brilliantly throughout 2021 and even got the better of Tsitsipas in their last meeting at the Miami Open.

The last six games between the pair on the ATP Tour have gone the distance and this is likely to be the case in Sydney.

Tsitsipas leads 7-2 when it comes to head-to-heads but considering he has recently gone through elbow surgery, we're backing Poland to take the initiative in this tie.
