Liverpool vs Crystal Palace tips and predictions: Reds to survive Crystanbul repeat at Anfield

Crystal Palace are making a habit of throwing away points so we’re backing them to do the same against Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday (1400 BST)

The weekend after European fixtures tend to throw up surprise results but few will be betting on Crystal Palace to beat Liverpool at Anfield.

Gian Piero Gasperini produced his latest masterclass on Thursday as his Atalanta side floored the Reds, beating them 3-0 in the Europa League.

Gianluca Scamacca’s opener was the fifth time in seven matches Jurgen Klopp’s side have fallen behind, so it’s not out of the question those trends continue on Sunday.

It would be wild to suggest Palace will become the fifth team to win at Anfield in over three years, but we’re expecting a competitive game.

Oliver Glasner is still settling into life as Eagles boss but he’s already embraced the age-old tradition of giving Man City a scare.

His side took the lead against the Premier League champions, the seventh time they’ve hit the front in eight matches, before losing 4-2.

They haven’t enjoyed the same success against the Reds, drawing two and losing 11 of their previous 13 meetings.

That stat won’t stop Liverpool fans of a certain age from seeing Dwight Gayle in their nightmares this weekend as the 10th anniversary of ‘Crystanbul’ draws near.

The current Palace team are just as liable to suffering a collapse so backing Liverpool to win from behind could be a profitable angle at 7/1.

The visitors have scored first and dropped points in six of their previous nine while Liverpool have won from behind seven times, including a 2-1 win at Selhurst Park in December.

Even if they don’t take the lead, there could be money to be made on backing both teams to score. Liverpool have conceded in 13 of 14 at home so may need to score two to win.

Team news

Joel Matip and Thiago Alcantara are ruled out, while Allison Becker remains a doubt.

Mo Salah, Luis Diaz and Dominik Szoboszlai were spectators during the first half on Thursday but should start on Sunday.

Sam Johnstone, Cheick Doucoure, Marc Guehi, Rob Holding, Chris Richards and Matheus Franca are unavailable.

Jeserun Rak-Sakyi is also likely to miss out.
