One of the biggest rivalries in Italian football will have a new chapter when Fiorentina face Juventus on Sunday evening (1945 GMT).

Juve haven't won in Tuscany in the league since December 2018. However, since then Fiorentina have only won once, with three games ending in a draw, including their last meeting at Franchi, in September last year.

The last seven head-to-head games, in all competitions, between these two sides have not garnered more than 2.5 goals, with both teams to score only landing twice.

The most recent game between the two teams with over 2.5 goals scored was back in December 2020, when Fiorentina claiming a 3-0 win.

Just two rounds ago, after the away win against the defending champions Napoli, Fiorentina were in the top four. But two defeats, without scoring, followed  which saw the Viola drop to seventh in the league table, with 17 points.

The Tuscans have the fourth best attack with 18 goals scored, but they can’t seem to sort out their defensive problems with 14 goals conceded - the weakest defence in the top half of the table.

Against Juve, Vincenzo Italiano's side will be without a few key players including Dodo, Yerry Mina, Michael Kayode and Gaetano Castrovilli all injured and unavailable on Sunday night.

After the last round of matches, Juventus climbed to second place in Serie A, two points behind the leaders Inter Milan. The win over Verona last week was their fifth consecutive clean sheet in the league.

In fact, with only six goals conceded from ten Serie A matches, ”La Signora” have the second best defence in the league after Inter.

However, head coach Massimiliano Allegri still has several players missing. Paul Pogba and Nicolo Fagioli are suspended, while Danilo, Alex Sandro, Mattia De Sciglio and Timothy Weah are injured.

The good news though, is that Fiorentina’s former players Federico Chiesa and Dusan Vlahovic have overcome their injury issues and are likely to spearhead the attack against their former team.
