Spare a thought for the Germans. After kicking off the tournament against the current World champions, they now turn their attention to the defending European champions.

If that wasn't enough, Germany are now under pressure to win points after falling to a 1-0 defeat against France.

Despite the defeat, Joachim Low's side put in an encouraging performance in Munich. Ultimately, they succumbed to a team that doesn't appear to have any weaknesses.

Portugal, meanwhile, picked up a 3-0 victory over Hungary. Don't get me wrong, that's an impressive result, but there was still something missing about their performance.

All of the goals came in the final six minutes and two of them were rather fortuitous. Unlike Hungary, the Germans aren't expected to sit behind the ball for the duration of the game. With that in mind, we could be in for a classic.

Last Three Matches

Germany 4-0 Portugal (2014 World Cup - June 16, 2014)
When the draw for the 2014 World Cup was made, Germany was without doubt the team to avoid.

Portugal found out first hand why that was indeed the case.

Two goals from Thomas Muller and one from Mats Hummels saw the Germans go into the interval with a 3-0 lead.
Muller then completed his hat-trick in the second half as Die Mannschaft romped to a comprehensive victory. It's no surprise they went on to win that World Cup.
Germany 1-0 Portugal (Euro 2012 - June 9, 2012)
A couple of years earlier, both teams also met in the Euro 2012 group stage.
In their opening game of the tournament, the two nations produced a tight encounter in Lviv, Ukraine.
In the end though, it was a solitary goal from Mario Gomez which allowed the Germans to take all three points.
Portugal 2-3 Germany (Euro 2008 - June 19, 2008)
Germany's route to the Euro 2008 final saw them clash with Portugal in the quarter-final stage.
It proved to be another classic as 39,000 fans in Basel intently followed the five-goal thriller.
Bastian Schweinsteiger and Miroslav Klose put the Germans in-front early with two goals in the 22nd and 26th minute.
Portugal halved the deficit with a goal from Nuno Gomes just before the interval.
Michael Ballack restored Germany's two-goal advantage but it didn't last long. Helder Postiga bagged a late goal for Portugal to set up a dramatic finish but ultimately, Low's men held on for the win.

A classic fixture on the international calendar

Considering some of the dramatic clashes between Germany and Portugal, it's fair to say that this is one of the classic fixtures of international soccer.
The Germans have won four straight games against their old rivals but then again, their last meeting was seven years ago.

Dejected looks from members of the Germany team after their 1-0 loss to France

A lot has changed since then and Portugal are more than capable of ending their losing run against Die Mannschaft.

Let's not forget, Germany is in a bit of a slump having only managed one victory from four games. Recent defeats to Spain (6-0) and North Macedonia (2-1) will have been duly noted by Cristiano Ronaldo and co.

Portugal's defence as strong as the attack

A lot has been made of Portugal's attacking prowess. Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Renato Sanchez, Diogo Jota - there's certainly a lot to boast about.

One area which perhaps doesn't get as much praise is Portugal's defence.

Fernando Santos satisfied with win over Hungary even if Portugal leave it late

Fernando Santos' side have only lost one of their last 16 games. What's more, that one defeat did come against World champions France.
Nevertheless, during those 16 games, Portugal have kept 11 clean sheets and conceded just seven goals.
Germany have struggled to break down high-quality opposition in recent months and if they don't turn it around soon, Portugal could be on course for another clean sheet.

Goalscorer bets

If anyone can make an impact in this game, it's Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Juventus frontman already has two goals to his name after helping his side to a 3-0 win over Hungary.

Portugal, Euro 2020

Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo

At 6/4, he's well priced to get amongst the goals in Munich.
