Betting preview: Brighton vs Leeds - Leaky defences should mean goals at the Amex

Planet Sport previews Saturday's evening fixture between Brighton and Leeds at the Amex Stadium.

Two teams meet at the Amex both desperate for victory for differing reasons.

The hosts sit ninth after an impressive start to the season but are without a win in seven games, while Leeds United sit just above the drop zone.

Despite the Whites looking over their shoulders, victory would lift them just three points behind Brighton. With Graham Potter and Marcelo Bielsa on the touchline, neutrals could be treated to a Saturday of free-flowing soccer.

Going into 2021/22, Leeds were expected to kick on from last season's top-half finish but it has been a hard watch.

They have suffered injuries to key players, including Patrick Bamford, and are counting the cost of a relatively inactive summer transfer window - Daniel James being their only key signing. Unable to continue the intense nature of their attacking play from 2020/21, teams have found a way to beat them.

With 12 goals from as many games and 20 conceded, it is not hard to understand the problem. However, they did show promise in the first half against Tottenham. But after Leeds opened the scoring, Spurs responded to snatch the three points, inflicting a fifth defeat of the season on the West Yorkshire side.

There is hope, though, as Leeds are up against a team that have conceded nine in four, which included a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Manchester City.

Brighton are also without a win in seven, although five of them have ended in draws. But while the wins have dried up, the cards haven't. The Seagulls have been shown 31 yellows this season, the second most in the league after Newcastle United (33), with Shane Duffy and Adam Lallana picking up four each.

Last three meetings

Brighton 2-0 Leeds (May 1, 2021, Premier League)

Brighton vs Leeds 2021

Brighton all but secured their Premier League status with victory over Leeds at the Amex.

Graham Potter's side made a positive start and won a penalty following a foul by Ezgjan Alioski on Danny Welbeck. Pascal Gross opened proceedings, finding the bottom corner.

Brighton squandered a handful of chances but Welbeck put the game to bed 11 minutes from time with a cool finish. It ended the six-game unbeaten run of Leeds, who were without key midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

Leeds 0-1 Brighton (January 16, 2020, Premier League)

Neal Maupay

The Seagulls earned the victory to end a barren run of nine Premier League games without a win.

Neal Maupay scored the only goal inside 17 minutes after good build-up play between Alexis Mac Allister and Leandro Trossard. It was Maupay's fourth goal in five games against Leeds.

The Frenchman also become the first player since Glenn Murray to score 10 or more Premier League away goals for Brighton.

Leeds 2-0 Brighton (March 18, 2017, Championship)

Chris Wood

A Chris Wood brace gave Leeds United a crucial win over their promotion rivals.

After a dull first half at Elland Road, Wood scored a looping header from Charlie Taylor's cross to send the hosts ahead.

New Zealand international Wood netted his second of the day and 24th Championship goal after converting from the spot.

Brighton the bogey team for Leeds

Marcelo Bielsa Leeds Aug21

Marcelo Bielsa has been forced to field players out of position in recent games. Kalvin Phillips played as a centre-back against Tottenham, doing a superb job in keeping Harry Kane quiet, albeit a Kane who has scored just once in the league this season.

Rodrigo, Joe Gelhardt, Daniel James and Tyler Roberts have all been tasked with trying to fill the void left by Bamford but none have convinced.

Brighton won four of their first five games, conceding just five goals but in their last four, they have shipped nine. In that sequence they did face an Aston Villa side buoyed by the arrival of Steven Gerrard as well as title contenders Manchester City and Liverpool - drawing 2-2 with the latter. Leeds, meanwhile, have let in 20 this campaign, six more than Brighton.

With eight wins in their 10 last meetings, Brighton are very much a bogey side for Leeds and we fancy them to continue their good run. A home win and both teams to score can be backed at 31/10 with Planet Sport Bet.

However, if you fancy Leeds' goalscoring woes to continue, a Brighton win to nil has been price-boosted to 3/1.

Goalscorer bets for Brighton vs Liverpool

Brighton's top scorer with four goals and a player who enjoys playing against Leeds, Maupay is 29/20 to score at anytime, 15/4 to score first and 8/1 to bag a brace.

There is good news for Leeds fans with Raphinha and Rodrigo, who missed the Spurs game through illness and injury respectively, in contention to feature on Saturday.

Raphinha has racked up five goals in 10 Premier League appearances, opening proceedings in a game twice. He is 15/2 to score the first goal.
