Soccer tips: Zenit vs Chelsea - Expect goals as Blues search for confidence-booster

After a disappointing couple of Premier League results, Chelsea will be looking to get back to their best in Russia.

There isn't a great deal at stake when Chelsea travel to St Petersburg to face Zenit in their final group stage match.

Thomas Tuchel's men will see it as an opportunity to get the disappointing defeat to West Ham out of their system, though, and arrest some stuttering form of late.

Zenit, on the other hand, will be playing their last Champions League game of the season, although they will continue on in the Europa League.

It's a bit of a free hit for them in front of their own demanding fans, so expect them to try to go out with a bang.

When, where and how to watch

When: Wednesday, December 8, 17.45 GMT

Where: Gazprom Arena, St Petersburg

How to watch: BT Sport

Best bets for Zenit vs Chelsea

Chelsea to win and both teams to score at 11/5

Over 3.5 goals at 19/10

Chelsea to win 3-1 at 10/1

In terms of Champions League qualification the game is something of a dead rubber, but that may just invite more attacking soccer.

Zenit lost the reverse fixture 1-0 but they will be backing themselves to score on their own patch - they have scored 18 goals in their last four matches at the Gazprom Arena.

Wilmar Barrios of Zenit

Chelsea have been struggling for clean sheets too, lately. You'd still back them to win but combine it with both teams to score at 11/5.

Another way to try and take advantage of what is likely to be an open game is the goals over/under market. Over 3.5 goals will get you odds of around 19/10.

Last time out

Chelsea 1-0 Zenit (September 14, 2021)

Zenit certainly showed they were no pushovers when they travelled to Stamford Bridge back in September.

Chelsea were expected to roll the Russians over with some ease, but they were made to work incredibly hard for the three points.

It was Romelu Lukaku who earned them the spoils with a 69th-minute winner in what was just his fourth game since returning to the club from Inter Milan.

Recent form

Chelsea's Premier League form has faltered a little in the last couple of weeks, but it won't be concerning Thomas Tuchel too much.

They drew 1-1 at home to Manchester United in a game they really should have won and lost 3-2 at West Ham after leading twice. Sandwiched between the two was a laboured 2-1 win at relegation-threatened Watford.

Until the recent run, though, Chelsea were a picture of consistency, which is something you'd struggle to say about Zenit this season. They haven't won two games in a row since October.

Much of their struggles have come away from home, though. At the Gazprom Arena, Zenit have beaten Spartak Moscow 7-1, Dinamo Moscow 4-1 and Nizhny Novgood 5-1.

Chelsea will obviously provide a much greater test, but clearly Zenit are a team very comfortable on home turf.

Goalscorer bets for Zenit vs Chelsea

Romelu Lukaku rubs hands together

Chelsea are likely to give Romelu Lukaku the chance to play his way back into form in this one, and he could certainly do with a goal or two.

The Belgian's last Chelsea goal came against Zenit in the reverse fixture back in September.

He is, though, a man with real talent and one who will surely start scoring again sooner rather than later, and you'd be well-advised to back him at 5/2 to bag the first goal.

Veteran Artem Dzyuba has been in fine goalscoring form for Zenit this season and already has ten goals to his name.

The 33-year-old will be the man Chelsea are most worried about, and at 8/1 to score the first goal he should be at the forefront of punters' thoughts, too.
