Betting Preview: Villarreal vs Man Utd – Managerless United to face Europa League final repeat

Following the inevitable sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Manchester United will be targeting a turnaround in fortunes when they take on their recent Europa League conquerors.

Last time Man United had a temporary manager, he ended up staying for three years. Michael Carrick's reign is not expected to last as long, but the next few games will offer him an opportunity to prove himself in front of the fans, directors and the Glazers.

The Red Devils are currently top of their Champions League group, but with both Villarreal and Atalanta breathing down their necks, United can't afford anymore slip ups.

Best bets in Villarreal vs Manchester United

Villarreal to win and both teams to score at 15/4

Over 2.5 goals at 3/4

Villarreal to score first at 11/10

Man United to score last at 10/11

Just six months ago, Villarreal denied Ole Gunnar Solskjaer his first Man United trophy after beating the Red Devils in the Europa League final.

Since then, things haven't gone well for either team. Manchester United's struggles are well documented while Villarreal have somewhat gone under the radar.

Unai Emery's men are currently 12th in La Liga after winning just three of their 13 league games.

Despite this, there is an optimistic feeling about the Yellow Submarine. Villarreal won two of their last three games and it seems like this is a side that's about to turn the corner.

United, on the other hand, are showing no signs of improvement. The Red Devils have conceded 19 goals from their last seven games - a stat that is simply unacceptable for a side that is hoping to compete for silverware.

Considering how poor United were at Watford, our opening selection is to back the Spaniards. Villarreal to win and both teams to score is currently well priced at around the 15/4 mark.

Last six head-to-heads

Villarreal wins: 1

Draws: 4

Man United wins: 1

Villarreal goals: 2

Man United goals: 3

Back goals galore

Villarreal against Manchester United is not a fixture that delivers many goals. In fact, four of the last six have ended goalless.

However, considering the current circumstances, previous results are not a good indicator of how things could go on Tuesday night.

Villarreal have conceded goals in six of their last eight games while also scoring themselves in seven of those encounters.

Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo and team-mtes argue with referee Jonathan Moss after Watford's Kiko Femenia scores their side's first goal of the game before being ruled out and a penalty kick retaken during the Premier League match at Vicarage Road, Watford.

Man United, on the other hand, have seen 30 goals scored across their last seven games.

Bearing that in mind, our second selection is over 2.5 goals - a bet which landed in their first group clash back in September.

United could face another comeback scenario

If you're looking to back a team to score first, Villarreal are the team you back.

Emery's men have opened the scoring in three of their last four Champions League fixtures. If that wasn't enough, they also scored first in their last two league outings.

Villarreal's Etienne Capoue celebrate after scoring the 1-0 goal during UEFA Champions League match between Villarreal CF and Young Boys at La Ceramica Stadium on November 2, 2021.

On the other hand, you have a team like Manchester United - a side which consistently finds goals in latter stages of games.

Their sole effort against Watford last weekend came in the second half. Two of their three goals against Tottenham were also scored after the break. The same applies to all three of their goals against Atalanta when the two last met at Old Trafford.

Considering the goal scoring nature of both teams, we have two additional selections for you to chose from. The first is for Villarreal to score first at 11/10. The second, is for Manchester United to grab the game's final goal at 10/11.

Villarreal vs Manchester United goalscorer bets

Arnaut Danjuma has not wasted any time in paying back his £20million transfer fee.

Since arriving from Bournemouth in the summer, the 24-year-old has scored seven goals in 15 appearances for the Yellow Submarine.

Arnaut Danjuma Groeneveld of Villarreal CF celebrates during the Spanish La Liga, football match between Villarreal CF and Cadiz CF at Estadio de la Ceramica.

If the Dutchman is in the squad this Tuesday, he's certainly worth backing in the anytime goalscorer market.

Another man to watch is Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese forward has scored five Champions League goals this season - including the stoppage time winner against Villarreal two months ago.
