Betting preview: Southampton vs Aston Villa – Expect a flood of goals and corners on the south coast

The Premier League weekend kicks off at St Mary’s as a resurgent Southampton host a freefalling Aston Villa.

Before the start of the season, Southampton were considered one of the leading candidates for relegation. However, a recent upturn in form proves there's plenty of life left in Ralph Hasenhuttl's camp.

Villa, on the other hand, are looking to end their run of four straight Premier League defeats - a sequence that has seen them drop to 15th in the standings.

Best bets for Southampton vs Aston Villa

Southampton to win at 21/20

Over 2.5 goals at 4/5

Over 10.5 corners at 20/21

Planet Sport Bet have decided to price boost our selections for the Friday night match, you can now get all three at 6/1.

When the Villans looked ahead to their October schedule and saw games against Tottenham, WolverhamptonArsenal and West Ham, few would have expected an easy ride.

However, even fewer would have expected Dean Smith's men to come away from that run of games without a single point.

The Birmingham outfit have slid down the table and now boast a record of six defeats from 10 Premier League games - a haul of losses second only to bottom-of-the-table Norwich (8).

Southampton will be well aware of Villa's struggles as they look to extend their own three-match unbeaten run.

Victories over Leeds and Watford, plus an entertaining draw with Burnley, have seen Saints build a four-point cushion over the bottom three.

Southampton's Theo Walcott (centre) applauds the fans after the Premier League match at St. Mary's Stadium, Southampton.

Hasenhuttl's men have become a tough nut to crack having only suffered three defeats this season - the same amount as Manchester United and Arsenal.

Bearing everything in mind, the home side are the ones to back in the outright market.

Last three meetings

Southampton 0-1 Aston Villa (Premier League - January 30, 2021)

Aston Villa ended their nine-match winless run against Southampton when the two teams last met in the Premier League.

Ross Barkley's first-half goal proved the difference at St Mary's.

Southampton did threaten and even had a stoppage-time equaliser ruled out following a VAR check.

Aston Villa 3-4 Southampton (Premier League - November 1, 2020)

Aston Villa almost pulled off the mother of all comebacks when they last hosted Southampton at Villa Park.

The visitors romped to a 4-0 lead with Jannik Vestergaard, James Ward-Prowse and Danny Ings getting among the goals.

However, with 28 minutes remaining, the home side eventually kicked into gear. Tyrone Mings put his side on the scoreboard while stoppage-time efforts from Ollie Watkins and Jack Grealish had the Southampton fans sweating.

Southampton 2-0 Aston Villa (Premier League - February 22, 2020)

Southampton dominated proceedings when the two sides met in the early weeks of 2020.

Goals from Shane Long and Stuart Armstrong helped the hosts to a 2-0 victory.

Villa enjoyed more possession but that was the only stat which went in their favour.

Last 10 head-to-heads

Southampton wins: 6

Draws: 3

Aston Villa wins: 1

Southampton goals: 23

Aston Villa goals: 11

Expect the goals to flow

Over the years, this has been a fixture that has delivered in the goals department.

Seven of the last nine head-to-heads have seen the 'both teams to score' bet land. In fact, there's been a total of 34 goals scored across those nine games.

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl following the Premier League match at The Etihad Stadium, Manchester.

Villa have been involved in some high-scoring affairs recently, too. The Villans may have lost all of their last four matches but there were still a total of 17 goals scored across those fixtures.

Southampton, meanwhile, may have started the season quietly but they too have seen the goals flow in recent weeks.

With that in mind, the over 2.5 goals bet is our second selection.

Corner bet worth consideration

The goals market is not the only one which will be popular among bettors, with corners also providing appeal.

In particular, it's the over 10.5 corners bet which catches the eye.

Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins celebrates scoring their side's first goal of the game during the Premier League match at Villa Park, Birmingham.

Both Aston Villa and Southampton have seen a high number of corners in their games last month.

The Villans, for instance, have seen the 'over 10.5 corners' bet land in three of their last four games. Saints, meanwhile, have seen a total of 32 corners across their last two fixtures alone.

Goalscorer bets for Southampton vs Aston Villa

Of all the players involved in Friday's fixture, it's Danny Ings who has scored the most Premier League goals this season, with three to his name.

However, with the former Southampton star expected to be ruled out through injury, the goalscorer market appears to be wide open.

Ollie Watkins is currently priced at 19/10 to score anytime. The 25-year-old appears to be finding form having stamped his name on the scoresheet last weekend against West Ham.

Those odds will certainly make him a popular selection.

With regards to Southampton, it's Che Adams who leads the market at 8/5.

The short price shouldn't come as a surprise considering the 25-year-old has bagged goals in his last two outings.
