Betting Preview: Newcastle vs Norwich – Magpies to prevail in basement battle

There’s a big battle brewing at the bottom of the Premier League table as Newcastle welcome Norwich to St James’ Park.

Despite being 13 games into the new season, Newcastle are still on the lookout for their first victory.

The Magpies will be desperate to change that but considering the form that Norwich are in, Eddie Howe is likely to have a big fight on his hands come Tuesday night.

Dean Smith has enjoyed a strong start to his managerial tenure at Norwich. A 2-1 win over Southampton was followed by a goalless draw against an in-form Wolves side last weekend.

The recent upturn in form has given Canaries fans fresh survival hopes - a feeling which cannot be reciprocated by Newcastle supporters who haven't seen their side win since May.

The main issue for the Magpies is their inability to keep the ball out of their own net. Eddie Howe's men have conceded 29 goals this season - nine of them in the last four games.

Despite this, Newcastle are improving and it's no surprise to see them as favourites ahead of Tuesday's game.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe applauds the fans after the final whistle during the Premier League match at the Emirates Stadium, London.

This is a side which has lost just two of their last five games - both defeats coming against top five opposition in Arsenal and Chelsea.

With Howe making his long-awaited home debut, we're backing the hosts to finally get up and running. Newcastle to win and both teams to score is currently available at 7/2 courtesy of a Planet Sport Bet Boost.

Expect goals galore at St James' Park

Newcastle United, Brentford, Premier League

Over the years, games between Newcastle and Norwich have rarely disappointed in the goals department. The last eight head-to-heads, for instance, have alone produced 31 efforts.

Goals have been hard to come by for the Canaries this season with Dean Smith's men only managing to find the back of the net on seven occasions.

However, considering their opponents have conceded more times than anyone else in the Premier League, surely this is the perfect opportunity for Norwich to rediscover their goalscoring form.

Unlike Norwich, United have had no issues finding the back of the net. Howe's men have scored 15 times during this campaign - the same as fifth-placed Arsenal and more than the likes of Wolves, Tottenham and Brighton.

With that in mind, our second selection is to back the over 2.5 goals market. Afterall, this is a selection which has landed in five of the last six head-to-heads.

Tight encounter in prospect

Norwich City's Brandon Williams (centre) celebrates after team-mate Grant Hanley (behind) scores their side's second goal of the game during the Premier League match at Carrow Road, Norwich.

Since their 7-0 drubbing at the hands of Chelsea, Norwich have been involved in some closely fought encounters. For example, three of their last four games have been determined by a one goal margin.

Newcastle, on the other hand, have also been involved in a number of close contests - something underlined by their haul of six draws this season.

With both Newcastle and Norwich desperate to pick up points in their battle against relegation, we're expecting another tight meeting at St James' Park.

Bearing that in mind, our third selection is to back a one goal margin at around the 13/10 mark.

Goalscorer bets for Newcastle vs Norwich

Steve Bruce welcomes back ‘entertainer’ Allan Saint-Maximin

Callum Wilson currently leads the anytime goalscorer market for Newcastle at around the 20/21 mark.

The 29-year-old has scored two goals since returning from injury but is in the midst of a four-match scoreless run.

Instead of backing the English forward, you might want to consider Allan Saint-Maximin at around 11/5.

The Frenchman is a constant attacking threat while his last goal came 10 days ago against Brentford.

With regards to the Canaries, Teemu Pukki is the man to back.

The Fin has scored more than half of all Norwich City's goals this season and at 13/8, he offers decent value.

What's more, Pukki has scored in two of his last three games and looks to be in red hot form.
