Betting preview: Chelsea vs Man City – Londoners to prevail in meeting of the Goliaths

Two of the Premier League’s title favourites go head-to-head in a repeat of May’s Champions League final.

Chelsea and Man City aren't just the two biggest powerhouses in club soccer but they're also led by two of the best managers in the sport.

The rivalry between Pep Guardiola and Thomas Tuchel originally began in the Bundesliga. Since then, their competitive feud has gone to the next level, with the latest instalment set to play out at Stamford Bridge this weekend.

Chelsea to win 1-0 at 7/1

Under 1.5 goals at 2/1

Kai Havertz to score anytime at 5/2

Since being handed the reins at Chelsea, Tuchel has taken charge of 38 games. In that time, the German has overseen 24 victories, nine draws and just five defeats.

Chelsea come into this game as the Premier League leaders with 13 points to their name - the same as Liverpool and Manchester United.

The Blues also have the second-best attack and the joint-best defence after bagging 12 goals and conceding just once.

Man City, meanwhile, have made a stuttering start - dropping points against Tottenham and Southampton.

The stats, including the recent head-to-heads, are pointing to another close encounter between the two clubs. Five of the last six games have been won by a margin of one goal - four of them by Chelsea.

Tuchel does seem to have Guardiola's number at the moment and with that in mind, the first of our three selections is a 1-0 home victory.

Last three meetings

Man City 0-1 Chelsea (Champions League - May 29, 2021)

The last meeting between these two sides came in the Champions League final in May.

The Blues denied Guardiola his third European title thanks to a 42nd-minute effort from Kai Havertz.

The City boss made a host of changes in the second half but his efforts proved ineffective as Chelsea claimed just their second European Cup.

Man City 1-2 Chelsea (Premier League - May 8, 2021)

Just 21 days before that Champions League final, the Blues prevailed over their rivals in a league game.

Raheem Sterling opened the scoring in the 44th minute before Sergio Aguero missed a penalty just three minutes later.

In the second half, the visitors hit back. Hakim Ziyech produced the leveller in the 63rd minute to set up an exciting finish.

As the game entered stoppage time, Chelsea landed the knockout blow as Marcos Alonso bagged what proved to be the winner.

Chelsea 1-0 Man City (FA Cup - April 17, 2021)

The two clubs clashed in an FA Cup semi-final in spring.

This was one of Tuchel's first big occasions as Chelsea manager and the German duly delivered, winning 1-0 at Wembley.

Once again, it was Ziyech who scored to seal the win with a 55th-minute strike.

Last 10 head-to-heads

Chelsea wins: 5

Draws: 0

Man City wins: 5

Chelsea goals: 10

Man City goals: 15

High drama, few goals

Both Chelsea and Man City are capable of scoring a bucketload of goals. Early results in this new Premier League season have proven that to be the case.

However, when it comes to fixtures against other top sides, the number of goals scored does tend to fall.

Chelsea's last meeting against a comparably strong club ended in a 1-1 draw with Liverpool. Towards the end of last season, Tuchel's men were also involved in close encounters with LeicesterArsenal and City.

Speaking of the Citizens, it's been a while since they were last involved in a high-scoring shootout with one of the Big Six clubs. Their last such result came in February when they thrashed Liverpool 4-1.

Our first selection in this bet builder was a 1-0 win for the hosts in the correct score market. We're going to follow that up with an under 1.5 goals bet as our second tip.

Tuchel is now on equal footing with Guardiola

Following his departure from FSV Mainz in 2014, Tuchel famously met up with Guardiola in a bar on Munich's Odeonsplatz.

The story has it that both men were so passionate and so engaged in their chat about soccer philosophy, that their salt and pepper shakers were flying across the table.

Unconfirmed reports suggest the waiters were nervous about approaching their table as the two soccer nerds exchanged ideas about the beautiful game.

Seven years on, the two men went head to head in the final of the Champions League. It proved to be a game in which Tuchel's tactics not only helped his side to victory but also put him on equal footing with one of the game's greatest managers.

The two men reignite their rivalry this weekend with Guardiola being in the unfamiliar position of having more to prove than the man in the opposite dugout.

Whatever the outcome, it's fair to say this is the biggest managerial rivalry in world soccer at the moment. And we're loving every second of it.

Goalscorer bets

Romelu Lukaku is the favourite to score anytime at 6/4.

The Belgium international is in great form and normally he would be our first-choice pick.

However, recent encounters between Chelsea and Man City have not been too favourable for strikers.

Chelsea's Kai Havertz (left) lifts the trophy with Timo Werner following victory in the UEFA Champions League final match held at Estadio do Dragao in Porto

Kai Havertz was the man who scored in the Champions League final, while Marcos Alonso bagged the winner against the Citizens in their last Premier League meeting.

Hakim Ziyech has also scored a couple in recent meetings with the Manchester outfit.

Considering Ziyech doesn't get much game time, our pick is Havertz to get on the scoresheet at around the 12/5 mark.
