Betting Preview: Aston Villa vs West Ham – Hammers to pile further misery on Villains

Aston Villa will be looking to avoid their fourth straight Premier League defeat when they welcome in-form West Ham to Villa Park.

Dean Smith's side are in the midst of a worrying run of results - one which has seen them slip into the bottom half of the table.

West Ham, on the other hand, have won seven of their last eight games across all competitions, including a victory over Manchester City in the Carabao Cup last Wednesday night.

Best bets in Aston Villa vs West Ham

West Ham to win at 7/5

Both teams to score at 8/13

West Ham to score in both halves at 23/10

Many often attribute Aston Villa's loss of form to the departure of Jack Grealish during the summer.

However, Villa's issues go back further than that. In fact, this entire calendar year has been one to forget.

Out of 36 competitive games in 2021, Villa have won just 12 - a win percentage of just 33%. They've also suffered 18 defeats and endured six draws.

While Villa have been on the slide, West Ham have enjoyed an incredible transformation from relegation contenders to European challengers.

The Irons won 10 of their 14 competitive games this season, only falling to defeats against Brentford and Manchester United.

West Ham boss David Moyes favours Champions League push over relegation battle

David Moyes' men entered the weekend in the top four and his side are well priced to stay there come Sunday night.

With that in mind, we're backing the visitors to extend their winning run.

Last three meetings

Aston Villa 1-3 West Ham (Premier League - February 3, 2021)

Last meeting between Aston Villa and West Ham ended in a comprehensive victory for the visitors.

Tomas Soucek put the Hammers ahead in the 51st minute before Jesse Lingard quickly doubled that lead.

Ollie Watkins gave the Villains late hope but his goal proved inconsequential as Lingard scored West Ham's third to complete an impressive win.

West Ham 2-1 Aston Villa (Premier League - November 30, 2020)

When the two teams last met at the London stadium, it was the home side who once again prevailed.

Angelo Ogbonna bagged an early opener for the Irons before Jack Grealish levelled things up.

Jarrod Bowen got the match winner a minute after the interval.

West Ham 1-1 Aston Villa (Premier League - July 26, 2020)

Fans were treated to a late show when West Ham and Aston Villa met in the final game of the 2019/20 season.

After a relatively drab 84 minutes, the game came to life when Grealish opened the scoring for Villa.

A minute later, Andriy Yarmolenko hit back with a goal of his own to seal a point for the Hammers.

Last 10 head-to-heads

Aston Villa wins: 1

Draws: 5

West Ham wins: 4

Aston Villa goals: 5

West Ham goals: 11

Can Villa close the floodgates?

Scoring doesn't appear to be a major issue for Villa. Smith's men have scored in five successive games and they've bagged more Premier League goals than the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham.

The real problem appears to be keeping goals out.

Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins sits dejected during the Premier League match at Villa Park, Birmingham.

The Villains have conceded eight goals in three games - their worst defensive performance since early January.

With Villa seemingly unable to keep it clean at the back, the both teams to score bet should be a popular one come Sunday.

Goals keep coming for West Ham

Unlike their opponents, West Ham have flourished at the back. In fact, the Irons haven't conceded a goal in normal time for over 360 minutes.

Despite this stellar defensive effort, it's West Ham's goal getting ability that has really caught the eye.

Only one team has been able to keep the Irons scoreless this season. That was Southampton back in early September when the two sides played out a goalless draw.

West Ham United's Aaron Cresswell and Declan Rice appeal to referee Tobias Stieler during the UEFA Europa League Group H match at the London Stadium, London

Since then, the Hammers have scored in ten consecutive games, bagging 14 efforts along the way.

With Moyes' men firing on all cylinders and Villa falling on hard times, the visitors are expected to maintain their goalscoring run.

With that in mind, our third selection is to back West Ham to score in both halves.

Goalscorer bets

Michail Antonio is no longer leading the goalscoring charts in the Premier League. Nevertheless, he still boasts an impressive haul of six.

The striker scored the winning goal against Tottenham last weekend and he may come to the forefront again on Sunday.

At the price of 29/20, the Jamaica international is sure to be a popular choice in the anytime goalscorer market.

Danny Ings is Aston Villa's top scorer with three to his name. The former Southampton forward has never scored against the Hammers and he'll be keen to change that this weekend.

However, our selection is Ollie Watkins. The 25-year-old has just one league goal to his name this season but that won't be the case for long.

Watkins scored in his last outing against the Hammers and he certainly has enough quality to make it two from two.
