Zinedine Zidane turns down opportunity to coach Algeria

Reports from L'Equipe indicate that French football icon Zinedine Zidane has politely declined an offer to assume the reins of the Algeria national football team.

This decision comes amidst the Algerian Football Association's quest for a successor following the resignation of Djamel Belmadi, prompted by Les Fennecs' premature exit from the AFCON group stage.

Despite his Algerian heritage, the Marseille-born maestro, a pivotal figure in France's 1998 World Cup triumph, has opted against returning to the coaching arena.

While flattered by the expression of interest, Zidane remains steadfast in his decision to remain on the sidelines for the time being.

Since his departure from Real Madrid in 2021, Zidane has been unattached to any managerial role, sparking speculation about his next move.

It's widely known that the former midfield maestro harbours ambitions of leading the French national team; however, with Didier Deschamps extending his contract until 2026, and Thierry Henry now at the helm of the France U21 squad, Zidane's path seems less clear.

Notably, L'Equipe highlights that Zidane has recently rebuffed offers to coach the national teams of the United States and Brazil.

As for Algeria, potential candidates being considered by the Algerian FA include current France Women's manager Hervé Renard, seasoned coach Vahid Halilhodzic, former Switzerland boss Vladimir Petkovic, and ex-Argentina and Chile manager Jorge Sampaoli.
