Where would Chelsea be without Cole Palmer? His incredible stats and more…

In the 2023 summer transfer window, Chelsea signed Cole Palmer from Manchester City for £40million and ever since then he has hit the ground running.

Palmer is currently the joint Premier League goal scorer with Erling Haaland on 20 goals, but he also has nine assists which is one off Ollie Watkins, who has the most with 10.

This is just in the Premier League too - in all competitions, Palmer has five goals and four assists in other competitions so overall he has got 25 goals and 13 assists.

Palmer has saved Chelsea in multiple games this season, with two late strikes against Manchester United, a penalty against his old club Manchester City in the final minutes and many more where his goal contributions have won Chelsea the game.

Palmer is still only 21 and this is his first season in the Premier League where he has consistently been playing week in week out, so it was a risk from Chelsea to buy Palmer - however it’s safe to say that the risk has paid off.

What are Chelsea's main issues?

Chelsea have been a team that have been struggling for the past two years after finishing 12th in the 22/23 season and that they are currently ninth in the league following Tuesday night’s 5-0 drubbing by London rivals Arsenal.

There are many issues within the club and one of them is the lack of experience in the squad.

The most experienced player in the team is 39-year-old Thiago Silva and it was announced this week that he will be leaving at the end of this season.

That means Raheem Sterling, who is 29, will be the most experienced player in the squad, and the lack of experience has shown over these past couple years in cup finals.

Another issue is the amount of money that the ownership is spending on players. Three examples of this are Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo and Mykhailo Mudryk who are all young players which have been brought for an overall spend of around £300million.

All these players have very high potential, however currently they aren’t showing the quality for the price that they were bought for.

This then leads to bigger issues due to Financial Fair Play. There have been rumours that Chelsea need to sell players to then be able to buy players.

One player who has been rumoured of leaving is academy graduate Conor Gallagher, who has been one of Chelsea's best players this season and has performed better than Fernandez and Caicedo.

Which players have Chelsea been linked with?

Chelsea’s main issue within the team is putting the ball in the back of the net, despite Palmer’s contributions this season.

Nicolas Jackson has had a good season for Chelsea but he's not the prolific striker that Chelsea need.

There have been a few strikers that have been linked with the club, one being Victor Osimhen.

The Nigerian striker would be a good fit for Chelsea, however the price that Napoli are asking for him is over £100million.

Former Chelsea player John Obi Mikel is trying to get the Napoli star to join the club and he also claims that Osimhen “loves Chelsea”.

Recently there's been links to Everton central midfielder Amadou Onana, which would be an odd signing for Chelsea after already spending £250million on midfielders in the past year and a half.

There are other positions which Chelsea need to improve in and one of them is left-back, with Ben Chilwell having fitness struggles and Marc Cucurella not living up to his expectations.

They also have Ian Maatsen out on loan at Borussia Dortmund, however it looks as though the German side will be activating his release clause for £35million.

There have been a few links to Bayern Munich's Alphonso Davies, who only has one year left on his contract and the Canada international is a player who has publicly said that he was a Chelsea fan.

One problem with this is Chelsea aren't in the Champions league and this will be a factor for all the top names that Chelsea are interested in.
