Villarreal sign Rayo Vallecano midfielder Santi Comesana on a free transfer

Villarreal have bolstered their midfield once again with the signing of Santi Comesana, marking their second acquisition of the summer.

The 27-year-old Comesana joins from Rayo Vallecano on a free transfer and has committed to a four-year contract with the Yellow Submarine, following in the footsteps of Denis Suarez as a new recruit.

With his tall and robust stature, Comesana adds a commanding and anchoring presence to the midfield.

He demonstrates excellent positional awareness, is adept at identifying spaces on the field, and distributing the ball at the opportune moment.

However, he can sometimes struggle to keep up with his markers and relies on support from his teammates to perform at his best.

It will be intriguing to observe how Comesana adapts to the managerial style of Quique Setien, who often emphasises breaking down the opposition through sustained possessions, though he did introduce a more direct approach towards the end of last season.

Under the guidance of Andoni Iraola, Comesana became accustomed to the latter approach, where his role involved supplying passes to either Oscar Trejo or the wide players.
