Thomas Tuchel 'can win' Champions League with Bayern Munich says World Cup winner Lothar Matthaus

Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthaus believes newly appointed manager Thomas Tuchel can guide the Bavarians to European glory.

Former Chelsea manager Tuchel was appointed the new manager following the shock sacking of Julian Nagelsmann.

Bayern chiefs pulled the plug on the 35-year-old following the team's 2-1 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen - a result which saw them drop to second in the Bundesliga.

"It was a decision the club had to make with a heavy heart," Matthaus told Sky Sports.

"I am of the opinion that he probably no longer had the dressing room under control, as they say, not all the players behind him. And that, of course, is the worst thing that can happen to you.
He added: "Maybe it was an experiment from the beginning, that just didn't work out. They invested a lot of money, not only in Nagelsmann's salary, but also paid transfer fees to Leipzig, brought in many players that Nagelsmann absolutely wanted in his squad.
"A very broad, qualitatively well-positioned squad, which also costs a lot of money. And now, of course, you want to see results. And the results and the performances of the team in recent weeks and months show that a lot has gone wrong due to the standings."
Matthaus believes Thomas Tuchel is a good replacement for Nagelsmann and has backed the German to bring silverware to the Allianz Arena.
He said: "The new coach Thomas Tuchel is a good choice for me. He was already in conversation five years ago, but unfortunately it didn't work out at the time.
"And now Tuchel is the new coach at FC Bayern. And he should get the full backing of those responsible.
"He can win the Champions League, he can win the DFB Cup and, above all, he can play Borussia Dortmund. He knows Borussia Dortmund and that's why I think it's the ideal solution after Julian Nagelsmann."
Tuchel's first test as Bayern coach will be a potentially title-deciding Der Klassiker against Borussia Dortmund on April 1.
