Steven Gerrard eyes Rangers reunion as he continues to strengthen Villa

The Aston Villa boss has already made four signings this summer and is nowhere near finished.

Gerrard is now plotting to raid his former club Rangers according to reports.

Calvin Bassey is being linked with a move from the Glasgow giants to Villa and is 'open' to joining his former manager, according to Sky Sports News.

Gerrard wants to sign another left back to compete against Lucas Digne - who was the first permanent signing under Gerrard for £25m in January.

Matt Targett is expected to leave the club this summer while Ashley Young no longer has the legs to play regularly in defence.

However, Bassey - a former youth product of Leicester City - could cost around £25m, a fee that could put Gerrard off.

Bologna's Aaron Hickey is another player that Villa are interested in signing while Anderlecht's Sergio Gomez is also an option and a much cheaper one.

Bassey - who made 50 appearances for Rangers last season - was signed by Gerrard in 2020 and should the Midlands side pay the asking price for the Scotland international then they will be in a strong position of signing him.

Villa appear to mean business ahead of 2022/23 following the signings of Philippe Coutinho, Boubacar Kamara, Diego Carlos and Robin Olsen.

Gerrard admits finishing 14th this season was not good enough for a club like Villa and he will do all he can to ensure they improve.

"We have got enough volume here," Gerrard said about his current squad to Sky Sports.

"We have got enough bodies here. I don't need quantity. I am looking for upgrades in certain areas of the team, who will naturally make the squad better. We are looking to bring in players who are ready to play.

"When you are trying to get players in, it is not just about whether they can play, it is about what else they can bring to the culture.

"We are not just trying to recruit talent. We are trying to recruit characters, leaders and winners. We are looking for good people."
