Schalke 04 confirm their Bundesliga return following five-goal thriller with St Pauli

Schalke 04 secured their immediate return to the Bundesliga following a dramatic home victory over St Pauli in the penultimate game of the season.

The club bagged promotion after a dramatic comeback which saw the home side battle back from 2-0 down to beat St Pauli 3-2 in front of a sold out Veltins Arena.

Over 62,000 fans watched on as the visitors - who were hit with a Covid outbreak before the match and were forced to make a number of changes - took a shock two-goal lead inside the opening 17 minutes.
Schalke, who needed to win in order to secure automatic promotion, completed a stunning second-half turnaround as Simon Terodde's double and Rodrigo Zalazar's winner sealed a historic result for the Royal Blues.
A pitch invasion followed as Schalke ensured that their spell outside the top tier only lasted for one season.
The club were relegated during a disastrous 2020/21 campaign which saw the club go through five different managers, financial troubles and a 14-game winless run.
Schalke could also go up as champions should Werder Bremen slip up against Erzgebirge Aue on Sunday. Should the club finish top, it would mark their first honour since the 2011 German Super Cup.
St Pauli, on the other hand, were left frustrated as they threw away a two-goal lead and finished the match with nine-men following two late red cards.
The result all but ends their chance of promotion, considering they now find themselves three points adrift of second-placed Hamburger SV, third placed Darmstadt and fourth placed Werder Bremen - all of whom are on 57 points.

St Pauli's last game of the season will see them host Fortuna Dusseldorf. Schalke, meanwhile, will end their historic campaign away in Nurnberg.
