Newly crowned Champions League winners PSG kick off their Club World Cup campaign against Atletico Madrid in what promises to be a tasty encounter in Pasadena (Sun, 2000 BST).

You could argue that no side in the Club World Cup has as much momentum as PSG, who capped off a quadruple winning season by claiming their maiden Champions League trophy.

Luis Enrique has transformed the French team from being football’s equivalent of the Harlem Globetrotters to actually creating an exciting team full of young talent and few egos.

The Spaniard now has an opportunity to make more history as he looks to take the club towards another trophy in their debut Club World Cup appearance. Enrique has previously won the tournament with Barcelona back in 2015 and has experience in that regard.

Atletico Madrid are also making their Club World Cup bow, but they do so on the back of a somewhat disappointing season.

Diego Simeone’s men finished their campaign on a whimper, coming up well short of Barcelona and Real Madrid in La Liga, while also going out in the Champions League and Copa del Rey against those same two opponents.

The one positive for Atletico is the fact they beat PSG in their one meeting last season. The Spanish outfit picked up a 2-1 victory away in Paris during the league-phase of the Champions League back in November, with Angel Correa scoring a 93rd minute winner.

Sunday’s encounter will be arguably the first marquee game of the competition, and it will also be the first meeting between two European clubs in the tournament’s history.

While PSG are one of the leading contenders to win the competition, Atletico Madrid aren’t far behind, making this an intriguing encounter between top pretenders for the throne.

With Botafogo and Seattle Sounders making up this group, both PSG and Atletico are expected to progress into the knockout stages. However, picking up a positive result would not only act as a major confidence booster, but it would also send a message to the rest of the competition.

Here, we take a closer look at Sunday’s tasty encounter, picking out some of the best bets along the way.

As well as turning PSG into a close-knit team, Enrique has also developed them into becoming a goal-scoring machine.

The Parisians have scored 152 goals in 58 matches across all competitions last season, with five of those goals coming in the Champions League final.

Atletico also fancy themselves in front of goal. The Spaniards have scored exactly four goals in three of their last four matches.

Bearing all that in mind, we’re backing an action-packed encounter. Both teams to score and over 7.5 corners are our two opening bets.

In terms of specific players, we are backing Julian Alvarez to get on the scoresheet. The Argentine had three goal contributions when he played in the 2023 final for Man City.
