Amongst the glory that the Premier League promises each season, three teams will have to come to terms with relegation. Here, we take a closer look at the main contenders in the battle for survival.

From the inaugural Premier League season to the 2022/23 campaign, the same three newly promoted teams were all relegated on just one occasion. This took place back in 1998, when Bolton, Barnsley and Crystal Palace all narrowly missed out on survival.

In the two most recent seasons, we have seen that same phenomenon take place in back-to-back campaigns, with all promoted teams making a speedy return to Championship football.

Considering this emerging trend, Leeds, Burnley and Sunderland have all been hot topics of conversation around the upcoming relegation battle. Question is, who are the bookmakers backing to go down? Let's take a look…

    2025/26 Premier League relegation odds

    Sunderland - 1/4 (Favs)

    Burnley - 2/5

    Leeds United - 10/11

    Wolves - 10/3

    Brentford 4/1

    West Ham - 6/1

    Sunderland

Following the elation of the playoff final smash and grab, Sunderland fans now have to contend with the potential trials and tribulations of the Premier League.

Sunderland’s starting lineup in the playoff final had a combined total of zero minutes of Premier League football played – it's safe to say that experience is not a strong point for the Mackems.

Having been 12/1 to win the Championship last season (or fourth favourite), many now see Sunderland as being unprepared for the Premier League.

The summer transfer window has only seen midfielder Enzo Le Fee join on a permanent deal after being on loan at the club last season, and the loss of star midfielder Jobe Bellingham to Borussia Dortmund appears to be a major loss for the Black Cats.

    Burnley

Burnley are becoming somewhat of a yo-yo club, having been either relegated or promoted for the past four seasons. If the bookmaker’s prediction comes to fruition this season, this pattern will continue.

Last season, Burnley were defensively outstanding, setting the record for most clean sheets in a championship season and the fewest number of goals conceded in a 46 game season in English football history.

They were also unlucky not to win the Championship title, as they set the record for most points amassed without winning the title in English football.

Burnley’s transfer window has been more active compared to that of Sunderland, having further bolstered their defence already.

Despite this, Premier League survival still looks unlikely without a signing that can add goals to the team – midfielder Josh Brownhill was Burnley’s top scorer last season with 18 goals, however, he significantly overachieved his season xG of 9.9 and has previously only managed 4 Premier League goals in a season.

    Leeds United

Many football fans have tipped Leeds as the most likely to stay up from the three promoted teams following their dramatic final-day clinching of the championship title.

Whilst they are 4/5 to finish above their fellow promoted teams, they are still predicted to finish in the relegation zone next season.

Leeds finished the Championship season with 100 points last year, but that won't count for much considering Burnley earned promotion with 101 points a few years back and still faced relegation the following season.

Going from the Championship to the Premier League is like telling a child who has just learnt to walk to run a marathon – it’s too big of a step up in many cases.

New signings Lucas Nmecha and Jaka Bijol look like solid additions to a squad that already boasts the likes of Ao Tanaka, Wilfried Gnonto and Dan James, but the loss of left-sided duo Junior Firpo and Manor Solomon could prove costly for the Whites.

    Wolves

Wolves could well have been relegated last season after a woeful start under Gary O’Neil.

His sacking and the subsequent appointment of Vitor Pereira catalysed a vast change in form as Wolves climbed from 19th spot to 16th to avoid relegation.

It will be interesting to see what Pereira is capable of given a full pre-season, but according to the bookies, it won’t all be plain sailing for the Wanderers.

The departures of Rayan Ait Nouri to title contenders Manchester City and Matheus Cunha to top-half hopefuls Manchester United (sorry, United fans) are immense losses, and Wolves must reinvest their profits wisely if they are to survive the drop next season.

Wolves fans will feel confident that they can avoid relegation from the Premier League for the 8th consecutive season, but there's no doubt that the three promoted teams will see them as a target in the race for survival.

    Brentford

Despite an admirable 10th-placed finish last season, Brentford find themselves as fifth favourites to go down next season. After a period of stability and continuity in West London, there seems to be a major shake-up happening at the club.

Thomas Frank, who has been a vital part of Brentford’s recent success, has gone to Tottenham to start his new managerial journey.

Managing the club since 2018, Frank guided them to promotion in 2021 and established them as a formidable, hard-to-beat Premier League outfit. To replace him, Brentford have entrusted set-piece coach Keith Andrews.

But that's not the only big change for Brentford. Star player Bryan Mbeumo has been heavily linked with a move away from the club, with his future currently in the balance.

What's more, first-choice goalie Mark Flekken has left for Bayer Leverkusen and will be replaced by Ireland international Caoimhin Kelleher.

This season will undoubtedly be a huge test for Brentford and new manager Andrews who will be undertaking his first job as a first-team manager.

Despite the significant changes currently unfolding at the club, the Bees are expertly run with a top-notch recruitment team and a sustainable style of play that should be able to see off any relegation worries.

    West Ham United

The 2024/25 season can only be described as disappointing for West Ham fans after a promising transfer window which saw Max Kilman, Crysencio Summerville and Aaron Wan-Bissaka sign for the Hammers.

The club ended up sacking manager Julian Loputegi and replacing him with Graham Potter mid-way through the season, but that did not prevent them from enduring a woeful end to the campaign.

Despite the doom and gloom of last season and the betting odds placing them sixth most likely to be relegated, West Ham supporters shouldn’t be too worried.

Last season, they looked comfortably better than the three relegated teams even though they finished just one place above the drop, and they are 2/1 to finish in the top half of the table this coming season.

It also seems that none of the big six clubs have found out about Jarrod Bowen yet, so they get to enjoy him for at least another season.
