Next Southampton manager betting odds: Sheffield Wednesday boss backed to replace Russell Martin
With just one win in 16 Premier League games, Southampton decided to pull the trigger and say goodbye to Russell Martin. Question is, who will take over the St Mary’s hotseat?
An embarrassing 5-0 defeat to Tottenham was the final straw for the Southampton suits who decided fresh leadership was necessary in order to give the club their best shot at Premier League survival.
As things stand, the club are stone dead last with a mere five points to their name. Saints are so far behind that even two straight wins wouldn’t get them above 19th spot.
Here, we take a closer look at the main contenders to take over the Premier League’s latest managerial vacancy.
Good luck and please gamble responsibly.
(All odds are correct at time of article publication)
Danny Rohl – 5/4
According to latest reports, current Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl is already in talks with Southampton.
Wednesday is the German’s first main managerial role following previous coaching roles at RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich, the German national team and, you guessed it, Southampton.
Rohl has a contract with the Owls until 2027 but a Premier League opportunity would be hard to turn down.
Kasper Hjulmand – 2/1
Former Denmark manager Kasper Hjulmand has slipped down to second favourite with the bookmakers.
The 52-year-old was in charge of the national side for four years, with his biggest accomplishment being a semi-final run at the 2020 European Championships.
Hjulmand’s club history isn’t overly impressive, having worked with Lyngby, Nordsjaelland and Mainz.
Nevertheless, the Southampton job would undoubtedly give him an opportunity of a lifetime to underline his managerial credentials.
Carlos Corberan – 5/1
West Brom boss Carlos Corberan is another big Championship name on the list.
The 41-year-old has more experience of working in England than the other two earlier candidates have combined.
Before taking over the Baggies, Corberan worked under Marcelo Bielsa at Leeds United and was the main man in the dugout at Huddersfield Town.
Graham Potter - 10/1
Quick another manager has been sacked, throw Graham Potter on this list or the world will come off its axis...is probably what they say at all bookies' HQ.
So here he is at 10/1, significantly lower than in the next Tottenham and West Ham markets.
Why Potter would wait all this time and pass over many much bigger and safer jobs to join Southampton would be a question only he can answer. But 10/1 seems far too skinny.
David Moyes – 16/1
The former West Ham boss has been linked with near enough every big vacancy in recent weeks.
The 61-year-old certainly tops the list when it comes to experience. Taking the Irons out of relegation danger and towards European glory is another big tick in his box.
However, Moyes doesn’t exactly represent an attractive appointment. That probably explains his long odds.
Steven Gerrard – 20/1
The bookies love to throw a spanner in the works and add a quirky name in to the list. The likes of Rafa Benitez, Jesse Marsch, Will Still, and Jose Mourinho are all in the 25/1 region.
Another man around those numbers is Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard. The current Al-Ettifaq boss is rumoured to be on the brink of a sacking over in Saudi Arabia and could join the unemployment line anytime soon.
