Newcastle, Juventus or Man City: Ex-Prem midfielder opens up on Kalvin Phillips' transfer conundrum

With the European Championships just around the corner, Kalvin Phillips faces a big transfer decision this January.

The 28-year-old has struggled for minutes this season, making just four Premier League appearances for Manchester City.

Phillips has played the full 90 minutes on two occasions this season, once against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup and later in the Champions League against Red Star Belgrade.

The former Leeds United man is hopeful of a spot in the England team for the forthcoming European Championships, though a move on loan may boost his chances.

Phillips has been linked with a potential loan move this winter, with Newcastle and Juventus both showing interest.

Former Premier League midfielder Robbie Savage is confident Phillips will find his way into Gareth Southgate’s squad no matter where he ends up.

He told Planet Sport: “Gareth Southgate has a lot of faith in Kalvin Phillips as he continues to pick him in the England squad despite him playing hardly any minutes for Manchester City.

“I still think he’ll go to the Euros regardless of where he ends up after this transfer window.

“If I was him, I’d want to be playing Premier League football, so Newcastle looks a great option. The fanbase is unbelievable and they certainly need someone in that central midfield area.

“He needs to go where he thinks he’ll play the most football to get himself in the best possible shape for the Euros and the best option right now to me looks like going to Newcastle.”
