Marcos Alonso set to depart Barcelona: Atletico Madrid bound?

Marcos Alonso is set to bid adieu to Barcelona as his contract winds down this summer, per recent reports.

Having inked an 18-month deal in January 2023 with provisions for an extension, 33-year-old Alonso's playing time this season has been hampered by a back injury and stiff competition in the squad.

The emergence of Alejandro Balde and the presence of loanee Joao Cancelo have limited Alonso's minutes on the field to just 299 across seven appearances in various competitions.

Sources suggest that Barcelona have made the call to part ways with the versatile player once the current season concludes. Despite his significant contributions last season, which saw him featuring in 37 matches in different roles, Alonso's role diminished at the start of this campaign.

Though speculation swirls about his next move, with Atletico Madrid being a prime candidate, no official announcement has been made regarding his future. Reports from Cadena SER indicate a pre-existing agreement between Alonso and Atletico Madrid, although details remain unconfirmed.

Alonso's journey in Spain's footballing landscape has been diverse, having started in Real Madrid's academy before traversing to Barcelona. A potential move to Atletico Madrid would complete his stint with each of Spain's top three clubs.

In tandem with Alonso's potential departure, Sergi Roberto's future with Barcelona hangs in the balance as his contract also approaches its conclusion. The 32-year-old's fate seems intertwined with that of manager Xavi Hernandez, whose tenure at Barcelona remains uncertain beyond the current season.

As the summer transfer window looms, Barcelona face pivotal decisions regarding its squad composition, with Alonso and Roberto at the centre of attention.
