Manchester United will be ‘trying to win trophies’ under Erik ten Hag says former player

Former Manchester United midfielder and coach Michael Carrick believes the goal for the Red Devils at the start of the season will be to win silverware.

Carrick won five Premier League crowns and one Champions League title during his playing spell at Old Trafford.

The 40-year-old has recently been part of the coaching staff under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and took over as the caretaker boss when the Norwegian was sacked last November.

In his three games in charge, United picked up two victories and one draw. Nevertheless, he was promptly replaced by interim manager Ralf Rangnick.
The former England international, who was attending the qualifying session for Formula One's British Grand Prix at Silverstone, spoke with Sky Sports about his former side.

When asked about new permanent manager Erik ten Hag, Carrick said: "I think he's proved at Ajax and in his coaching career that he's got strong beliefs and his teams play a certain way and I'm looking forward to seeing that.

"I hope they get a good start this season - I think he can get a good start to the season - and then they get the momentum from there."
The former United midfielder also believes that the Red Devils will be setting their sights on silverware, adding: "You want to be right up there, of course you do.
"You want to be challenging. At the start of every season for Manchester United, you want to be trying to win trophies and win the league, so I'm sure they'll be trying to do that."

Former United player Jesse Lingard is currently a free agent after his contract with the club came to an end.

Carrick believes it's important for the 29-year-old to find a club where he can once again enjoy his football.
He said: "A World Cup year - for many it's a big year. A World Cup comes off the back of playing well for your club so for Jesse it's a big decision to get the right club, to play football, to be able to enjoy his football and get back to playing well again. Hopefully he can do that."
