Man Utd news: Ten Hag 'agrees to take over' at Old Trafford

Ajax boss reaches 'verbal agreement' with Manchester United to take reins in the summer, according to The Athletic.

Manchester United are set to appoint Erik ten Hag as their new manager, according to The Athletic.

The website said United and ten Hag had a verbal agreement in place and that the current Ajax head coach would be awarded a contract for "up to four years".

No deal has yet been done with his current employers - ten Hag has another year left to run on his Ajax contract - but that is not expected to be a major stumbling block.
The Athletic claims no announcement will be made until next week at the earliest with all parties aware of the potential of disruption for Ajax ahead of this weekend's Dutch Cup final against PSV Eindhoven.

United are also believed to have approached Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino about the job but in the end opted for ten Hag.

He will replace Ralf Rangnick, who has been managing the team on an interim basis since the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November.

Ten Hag has managed Ajax since 2017 and took them to the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2018/19 when they suffered an agonising last-gasp defeat to Tottenham having led the tie 3-0.
Erik Ten Hag appears top of Manchester United's managerial list

The 52-year-old will become United's eighth manager (fifth permanent) since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013 with the club still trying to find a formula to replicate the success they enjoyed under the legendary Scot.

He will likely inherit a team without Champions League football with United currently sitting just seventh in the Premier League, six points behind fourth-placed Spurs with just seven games remaining.
