The Three Lions were disappointing in Budapest as they fell to a 1-0 defeat courtesy of a controversial penalty.

Germany fared a little better in their opening Nations League match, drawing 1-1 at European champions Italy.

Who is the referee for Germany vs England

Whenever England and Germany play each other a strong official is usually required, and Spaniard Carlos Del Cerro Grande will be in charge of this one.
He has never actually refereed England before, but he was the Fourth Official for Three Lions matches twice in Euro 2020 - including the final.

He has officiated a Germany game before, though, overseeing their 1-0 defeat to France last summer.

Recent form

England's defeat in Hungary was their first in 10 matches, stretching back to the Euro 2020 final loss to Italy, so there seems little reason to panic.

Germany have drawn their last two games - away in Italy and the Netherlands.

However, prior to that they had strung together a run of eight successive wins immediately after their defeat to England at Euro 2020.

Last meeting

England 2-0 Germany (Euro 2020 round of 16, June 29, 2021)

The last time these two sides met it was certainly a memorable one, with England getting a huge win over their old rivals in the Euros.

They left it late in what was a nervy clash at Wembley, but Raheem Sterling broke the deadlock with 15 minutes left to spark wild scenes.

Harry Kane wrapped things up in the dying minutes after Thomas Muller had missed a gilt-edged chance for the Germans.

England vs Germany team news

Marcos Reus could return for Germany after missing the draw with Italy due to illness and Karim Adeyemi will be hoping for a chance to make an impression.

Expect Jamal Musiala to be pushing for a place, while Ilkay Gundogan and Kai Havertz will likely get minutes too.

Fikayo Tomori is still a doubt for England but fellow defender Marc Guehi will come into contention after injury. James Justin will miss out after picking up an injury in Budapest.

Raheem Sterling is back after illness too, but Gareth Southgate may keep the changes minimal to give his players the chance to bounce back after the Hungary defeat.

Managers' thoughts

Gareth Southgate takes his side to Munich absolutely relishing the challenge of facing a side he believes the rest of the world aim to emulate.

"For me, Germany and Brazil are still the benchmark in terms of countries that have regularly and consistently won tournaments," he said.
"Even when everyone talks about the 5-1 here [in 2001], they ended up in the World Cup final on the back of that qualifying campaign.
"So you have to respect what they are and where they are as a footballing country. We have to try and replicate that and instil that mentality.
"We have to keep getting to the latter stages of competitions and games like tomorrow are exactly what we need. I think it's a great measure for us, this will be a brilliant test of what we're about and where we're at.
"It won't define where we're at in six months' time if we win tomorrow and it doesn't mean we are going to win the whole thing in five, six months.
"One of the challenges before was can we beat the bigger teams and we've beat Belgium, Germany and Spain so we're starting to do that, so now it is can we continue to do that."

Germany boss Hansi Flick, meanwhile, appears to have an equal admiration for the England side.

"They have extraordinary players and their game is very physical," he said. "[Harry] Kane is a world-class striker, he has a huge quality. They could form three national teams,"
"It will be a big game for us and it will be important to implement our plan well."
